Marvin Evans was named the Fighting Owls’ head women’s basketball coach on June 29, 2024. Evans is originally from Stratford, Conn. and has held leadership roles all along the mid-Atlantic region, including Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. The first 12 years of his coaching career were spent in Maryland, with the first six years coaching at the high school level.
Evans arrived to Harford Community College after a two-year stint at Clarks Summit University (Clarks Summit, Pa.) where he began in the summer of 2022 as the Defenders’ head women's basketball coach and the director of the recreational center. Evans has a detailed resume for developing talent and rebuilding programs. In his first season leading the Clarks Summit women's basketball program, he guided the Lady Defenders to 18 wins and a trip back to the conference championship game for the second time in program history. The Defenders led the United East Conference in total points scored (2,033) and points per game (72.6), ranking 38th out of 425 NCAA Division III NCAA programs. Evans coached the United East Defensive Player of the Year and All conference team selection, Serene Calderon (2023-2024), as well as, All conference player Kylee Miller. Evans also coached and mentored the 2022 and 2023 conference Player of the Year, Elizabeth Singleton, along with three other All conference award winners.
In the summer of 2023, Evans was selected to coach the first ever Women's NCAA College Basketball Academy. The Academy provided the top HS Women's Basketball recruits in the country with a sample of the overall college basketball experience. The NCAA Academy paired high-level basketball competition with life skills instruction.
Prior to Clarks Summit, Evans spent time at Franklin and Marshall College (Lancaster, Pa.) where he held the position of lead assistant women's basketball coach (2021-22). He was responsible for weekly academic assistance and mentoring, scouting of Centennial Conference opponents, leading player development workouts, and assisting with recruiting and social media efforts. In 2020-21, Evans served as a volunteer assistant at NCAA Division I Delaware State University (Dover, Del.) where he assisted with practice planning, player development, scouting, travel plans, and recruiting.
Before Delaware State, Evans had a successful three-year run as the head women's basketball coach at Howard Community College (Columbia, Md.). He led the program to a complete turnaround in just three seasons, cumulating his tenure with the Dragons with a 20-10 record in 2019-2020, which included earning the first NJCAA Region 20 playoff victory in school history. During the historic 2019-20 season, Evans was named the Whoopdirt.com National Coach of the Week on February 18, 2020 and was later named a finalist for Whoopdirt.com Junior College Coach of the Year. Evans was responsible for recruiting and coaching three All-Region 20 players at Howard.
Evans also has experience at the NCAA Division III level, gained during his time at Goucher (2016-17) and Stevenson (2015-16). At Goucher, he worked with the post players and helped mentor Brianna Bull to Landmark Co-Defensive Player of the Year honors. Serving as the head coach of the women's club basketball team at Stevenson, he led the Mustangs to several victories over NCAA Division I club teams and had direct oversight over all areas of that team.
Evans got his start in college coaching at Anne Arundel Community College (Arnold, Md.) where he helped develop the 2014-15 NJCAA's leading scorer, Tiffany McKinney, to All-America honors while the team nearly doubled its win total from the previous season.
Evans graduated from Western Connecticut State University (Danbury, Conn.) in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in social work. On the court at WCSU, he served as a co-team captain for two years. And was one of the top 25 players in the history of the Little East Conference, ending his four-year playing career with 1,285 points and 717 rebounds. Evans was named the 2004 Little East Conference Player of the Year, ECAC Tournament MVP, and first-team NABC All-New England as a senior and still ranks among the program's best players in points and rebounds. Recognized as one of the Top 25 players in the history of the Little East Conference in 2011, he led his team to a pair of conference championships which resulted in trips to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Evans has earned his Certificate of Personal Training from the National Council for Certified Personal Trainers (NCCPT). In addition to his coaching experience, he is the owner of CMC Training, a program dedicated to assisting student-athletes in all facets of basketball development. Evans has also worked several high-profile camps, including the High School All-American Basketball Showcase where he served as the Maryland showcase director since 2017, the Howard University Elite Camp, and the Towson University Elite Camp.
