Head coach Hugh Donovan took the reigns of the men’s lacrosse program in 2011 and has improved every season, capped by the record-breaking 2013 campaign. The two-time MD JUCO Coach of the Year led the Fighting Owls to a school-record 12-win season last year that included a trip to the NJCAA National Tournament for just the second time in school history.

Harford was awarded three NJCAA All-Americans, another program-best, under Donovan’s guidance, bringing his All-American total to four in just three seasons. He earned his second consecutive MD JUCO Coach of the Year award while the Fighting Owls also picked up Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2013.

Ricky DeMicco was named OPOY after a 100-point season at Harford and Tom Yancheski nabbed DPOY honors with his stellar play between the pipes. Behind Donovan's coaching, Harford reached the 2013 Region XX Championship Game and earned an at-large bid into the NJCAA Tournament.

Year Record
2013 12-6
2012 7-10
2011 9-7
Total 28-23

The 2012 season saw Donovan named the MD JUCO Coach's Association Coach of the Year for the first time. He led the Fighting Owls to a second-straight appearance in the semifinals of the Region XX Championships while improving from a 5th seed the previous year, to the 3rd seed in 2012.

The 2012 season also saw Jacob Duarte be named an NJCAA Division I First-Team All-American under Donovan's tutelage. Duarte became the program's first player to receive All-American accolades in over a decade.

Since joining Harford, Donovan has guided 18 student-athletes to all-conference and all-region honors.

Prior to his time at Harford, Donovan was an assistant coach for two different NCAA Division I programs for a total of seven seasons. Most recently, Donovan served as the assistant coach at Mount St. Mary’s University from 1998-2001. He developed off-season training programs as well as being in charge of recruiting and game day operations. He was a member of Mount St. Mary’s first conference championship team in 1999.

Donovan was responsible for recruiting and in-season practice sessions during his first assistant coaching stint at his alma mater, Bucknell University, for three seasons, from 1996-98. He was the defensive coordinator for the Bison while coaching numerous All-American and All-Patriot League players.

He was also a professional lacrosse player in both the indoor and outdoor leagues for over eight years. Donovan was a member of the Baltimore Bayhawks 2001 MLL Championship team and the 2000 runner-up squad. He also played for five other professional teams from 1998-2005.

Donovan graduated from Bucknell with a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1996 after captaining the most successful Bison men's lacrosse team in program history, the 1996 squad that finished a perfect 12-0, capturing the Patriot League title and earning a No. 9 national ranking. Donovan was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year that season, and he is considered to be one of the top defensemen ever to wear the Orange & Blue. He was inducted into the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011.

Donovan had his wife, Lauren, live in Havre de Grace with their sons, Eammon and Liam.
