BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford women's soccer team took a two goal lead into halftime as the Fighting Owls (1-0) downed visiting Burlington, 2-1, in the opening game of the 2008 season on Thursday afternoon at Harford Stadium.
Freshman Tiffany Runk (Abingdon, Md./Kenwood) put the Fighting Owls on the board just 1:26 into the game with an unassisted rocket from 15 yards out. Less than 15 minutes later, Runk would score again, as she gathered a ball from freshman Lauren Ward (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) and fired into the upper right corner from around 20 yards.
The Barons (0-1) added their only goal on a penalty kick by Ashley Benson in the 84th minute after sophomore Kristin Tourville (Edgewood, Md./Joppatowne) was served with a yellow card.
Tourville was the third Owl to receive a card as freshmen Jamie Settle (Havre de Grace, Md./Rising Sun) and Becca Bazemore (Churchville, Md./C. Milton Wright) picked up yellow cards in the first half and sophomore Terry Buontempo (Nottingham, Md./Perry Hall) earned a yellow card in the 67th minute.
The Barons had just two yellow cards, with both going to Nicole Parks.
Sophomore Jessica Stumpf (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) and Celena King manned the nets for the Fighting Owls and Barons, respectively, with Stumpf recording five saves to King's one.
Burlington held an 11-8 advantage over Harford in total shots and 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Fighting Owls return to competition next Thursday when they travel to Brookdale for a 4:00 p.m. match.
