BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford men's soccer team tallied the game-winning goal, with just two minutes left in regulation, as the Fighting Owls (2-2-0, 1-1 Maryland JuCo Conference)defeated Cecil College, 1-0, in tropical storm conditions on Saturday morning at Harford Stadium.
The teams battled not only each other, but also Mother Nature in the form of Tropical Storm Hanna, which brought torrential rain and high winds.
Freshman midfielder Steve Landreth helped the teams skirt extra time in the wet conditions, and gave the Owls the win after tapping a ball past the goalkeeper from a free kick by freshman midfielder Brian Six at the 87:55 mark.
Harford took control of the game early on, pelting the Seahawks (1-1-1, 0-1-1 MDJUCO) with six shots in the first half, while allowing just two on its own goal.
The story was much the same in the second half, as the Owls maintained possession for the majority of the period, outshooting Cecil, 7-2, and scoring the game's only goal.
Harford held a 13-4 advantage over Cecil in total shots, 8-4 advantage in corners and committed just six fouls to the Seahawks' 11.
Freshman goalie Taylor Dize went the distance for the Owls, tallying two saves, while Roland Beck also played the full 90:00, allowing one goal and stopping four shots.
The Fighting Owls return to competition on Wednesday, Sept. 10 when they take on another conference foe in Southern Maryland at 6:00 p.m. at Harford Stadium.
