Harford Volleyball Falls to Anne Arundel, 3-1

Box Score

BEL AIR, Md.
—The Harford volleyball team earned a first set victory, and kept the score within four points, but couldn't manage to overcome Anne Arundel as it fell, 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 28-26, 25-21) on Friday night at the Susquehanna Center.

The Fighting Owls (3-21, 2-8 MDJUCO) hit just .040 for the match with 37 kills and 32 errors on 124 attacks and the Pioneers (7-6, 6-6 MDJUCO) did not fare much better, hitting at a .057 clip with 42 kills and 34 errors on 140 attacks.

Freshman Lydia Zeller (Fawn Grove, Pa./Kennard-Dale) led the Owls with a double-double on the night composed of 13 kills and 11 digs.  Zeller also hit .321 for the match, committing just four errors on 28 attacks and also tallied five assisted blocks.  Sophomore Brittany Kaszak (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) had a career day, totaling nine blocks (three solo, six assisted) while also posting eight kills.

Erica Moran led Anne Arundel with a double-double of 34 assists and 13 digs, while Linda Murphy added 16 kills.

The first set was a story of scoring runs early on, with the Owls jumping to a 4-1 lead before the Pioneers scored four straight points to take a 5-4 advantage.  After trading points, a Pioneer attack error set off a 6-0 run for Harford as it took an 11-6 lead.  Anne Arundel would battle back to tie at 13 points before scoring four straight to see itself up, 17-14.

Like its opponent, Harford would claw its way back, tying the score at 17 points before a 6-1 run saw the Owls up 23-18 on the way to the 25-22 set win.

Set two started in much the same way, but this time Anne Arundel would see the first run, scoring nine straight points after Harford opened the set up with a 2-0 lead.  After two possession changes saw the score at 10-4, a Pioneer error would spark an eight-point Harford run that put the Owls on top, 12-10.  Six ties and two lead changes later, the score would be knotted at 17 before Anne Arundel took the lead on a Harford attack on the way to the 25-23 win.

The Fighting Owls controlled the majority of the third set, building a 16-10 lead before the Pioneers scored five straight points to put themselves within one, 16-15, and after a brief Harford possession, build a three-point lead, 21-18.

Down 22-20, Harford would rally back with four straight points to set up a set point opportunity, but Anne Arundel would elude defeat twice and knotted the score at 24, forcing the game to at least 26 points.  A Murphy kill would give the Pioneers their first set point opportunity, but a Harford kill would tie the score at 25 and a Pioneer error would give the Owls their final set point chance, 26-25, before three straight points saw Anne Arundel earn the 28-26 win.

The final set once again saw Harford with a comfortable advantage, this time holding eight points over the Pioneers, 15-7, but a Harford error saw Heidi Rogers come to the serving line and proceed to serve for 10 straight points and complete an 11-0 run that saw Anne Arundel take a 18-15 lead on the way to the 25-21 match and set win.

The Fighting Owls return to action on Monday, October 19 when they host Frederick in a 7:00 p.m. match at Susquehanna Center.
