Box Score
BEL AIR, Md.—Freshman Lydia Zeller (Fawn Grove, Pa./Kennard-Dale) tallied her second straight double-double as the Harford volleyball team fell to Frederick, 3-1 (25-15, 25-14, 25-27, 25-13) on Monday night at the Susquehanna Center.
Zeller totaled 10 kills on 23 attacks with five errors for a .217 hitting percentage while also adding 10 digs and two aces for the Fighting Owls (3-22, 2-9 MDJUCO). Freshman Jaclyn Hall (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) was just two digs away from a double-double as she posted 22 assists and eight digs.
Alex Aburto tallied a double-double of 10 kills and 11 digs for the Cougars (13-8, 7-4 MDJUCO), while Sara Gartrell led the Frederick attack with 20 kills on 30 attacks with just three errors for an outstanding .567 hitting percentage. Gartrell also added six aces and eight digs on the night.
Set one started with some seesaw scoring from the two teams to tie the score at two, before a Gartrell kill started a six-point run behind Aburto's serve to give the Cougars an 8-2 lead. Harford wouldn't come closer than two points for the remainder of the set and another run, late in the game by Aburto would give Frederick an eight-point advantage, 20-12, on the way to the 25-15 set win.
The Cougars controlled the second set from the start, jumping to a 2-0 lead behind Ashley Beall's serve. The Owls would struggle to put together a significant rally for the entire set, with just two players earning a point on their serves. Meanwhile, Frederick would string together multiple-point rallies as they cruised to the 25-14 win.
After seeing just two players remain behind the service line for more than one point in the previous set, Harford would take an early 5-0 lead in set there behind Hall's serve and would continue to add multiple points during each rotation to build a 12-6 lead. The Cougars would string together four- and six-point rallies, however, while giving the Owls just one sideout point to knot the score at 13. Harford would hold its lead a bit longer, as Frederick tied the score at 16 and 17 points and then took the lead, 18-17, off a Beall kill.
The Cougars would build a three-point lead, 22-19, but five straight points would give Harford its first set point opportunity, 24-22. Frederick would elude two Harford set point chances to tie the score at 24, before a kill from sophomore Brittany Kaszak (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) gave the Owls a third chance, 25-24, which was also side-stepped by the Cougars to make the score 25-25. Zeller's kill presented Harford with its fourth opportunity to end the set and this time the Cougars helped out with an attack error that gave Harford the 27-25 set win.
The final set once again saw the Owls struggle to string together points and, much like set two, only two players earned points during their service, while Frederick saw numerous multiple point rallies on the way to the 25-13 set and match win.
The Fighting Owls return to action on Wednesday when they host Northern Virginia for their final home match of the season. The team will also honor its sophomore players with a pre-match ceremony before the 7:00 p.m. start at Susquehanna Center.
