BEL AIR, Md.—Sophomore Jamie Settle (Havre de Grace, Md./Rising Sun) added a goal and an assist to quadruple her season point total as the Harford women's soccer team blanked Howard, 5-0, on sophomore day Tuesday night at Harford Stadium.
The Fighting Owls (14-2, 7-1 MDJUCO) wrapped up the conference season with the win and claimed a share of the MDJUCO regular-season title after finishing with an identical, 7-1, record as Montgomery College-Rockville. Depending on the outcome of Thursday's game between CCBC-Catonsville and CCBC-Essex, the conference championship may end in a three-way tie. Meanwhile, the Dragons (7-10, 2-5 MDJUCO) are currently seventh in the conference standings, but can move up into a tie for sixth depending on the outcome of Friday's game against Anne Arundel.
Freshman Penelope Fantis (Fallston, Md./Fallston) led Harford in Tuesday's win with four points from two goals, while Settle added three points (1g, 1a) , freshman Erin Lynn (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and redshirt freshman Lyndsie Ludwig (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright/Wilmington) tacked on one goal each and sophomore Becca Bazemore (Churchville, Md./C. Milton Wright) and freshman Beth Lambros (Forest Hill, Md./North Harford) each added an assist.
Settle notched the eventual game-winner at the 18:01 mark as she dribbled through the center of the field and a host of Dragon defenders before beating Howard keeper Sarah Zimmerman to the right.
The Owls would fire 16 total shots in the first half, including three more goals, while the Dragons managed just one shot. Lynn continued the scoring in the 32nd minute with a header from a few feet off a Bazemore's high looping cross from the 18-yard line. Fantis would follow six minutes later, during the 38th minute, as Lambros fed her during a give-and-go, which the midfielder finished into the lower left corner.
Ludwig added the final tally of the half at the 41:35 mark as she sent a ball, which was intended as a cross, from the right goal line into the box, which curved at the last second into the left corner to give Harford a 4-0 lead at the half.
The Owls capitalized on their first scoring chance in the second half as Settle sent a short leading pass forward, which Fantis collected in the box and dribbled through the middle before beating Zimmerman to the right at the 50:46 mark.
Harford would play keep away until time expired, taking just one three more shots, while the Dragons managed four in the second half on the way to the 5-0 Harford shutout win.
The Owls outshot the Dragons 20-5 and held a 6-3 advantage on corner kicks, while Zimmerman totaled 10 saves in 90:00 and freshman keeper Alexandra Davis (Street, Md./North Harford) made two in the final 35:51 and teamed with freshman Cierra Stinson (Nottingham, Md./Mercy), who played the first 54:09, to notch the combined shutout.
The Fighting Owls wrap up the regular season on Saturday when they travel to face Prince George's at 12:00 p.m. before opening up postseason play next Thursday, October 29th in the Region XX semifinals.
