The Harford women jumped to a 4-0 lead, but it was short-lived as Prince George's scored seven straight points to take a 7-4 lead with 16:13 left. The Fighting Owls would battle back to take a 13-9 lead with 12 minutes remaining, but PG would outscore Harford 6-1 as they took the lead back for good, 15-14 with 10:52 left in the first half.
The Owls would build their lead to 12 points on a few occasions, but Harford would cut into that lead in the final minutes of the half to make it a seven-point, 30-23, deficit at the break.
Prince George's would notch a 3-pointer in the first few minutes to take its lead back to double-digits and would keep it there for the majority of the half, with Harford trailing by as many as 16 points on the way to the 66-54 final.
During the men's side of the doubleheader, the game unfolded in the opposite way, with Prince George's building an early, 11-6 lead, with 16:16 left before Harford went on an 8-2 run to take a 14-13 lead with 13:40 on the clock.
Besides a 22-point tie at the 9:24 mark, Harford led for the rest of the period, taking a 41-38 advantage into the half. The second half would see the Fighting Owls tie their largest lead of seven points, 47-40, just over one minute into the period, but PG would outscore the Fighting Owls 11-4 over the next six minutes to knot the score at 51. Harford would build its lead back up to seven with an 8-1 run and after some seesaw scoring would take its largest lead of the game, 68-60 with 5:07 remaining.
A layup and a make on the ensuing and-one by PG's Dwayne Franklin tied the game at 72 and after freshman Dontae Brown (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) split a pair of free throws, Brad Gilkes would give the Owls their first lead since the 14:13 mark of the first half with a trey at the 39-second mark. Two made free throws by Mears would make it a 77-73, four-point, two possession game and Harford would turn it over on their next possession before Mears tacked on another layup for a six-point lead, 79-73 with 14 seconds left. Brown would drain a long 3-pointer with 11 seconds left to cut the PG lead to three, but the damage would be down as Franklin split his free throws on the Fighting Owls' last ditch foul on the way to the 80-76 decision.
Both Fighting Owls teams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Garrett for a doubleheader with the women playing at 5:00 p.m. and the men tipping off at 7:00 p.m. The doubleheader against Prince George's will air on Harford Cable Network on Sundays at 7:00 p.m. beginning Dec. 6, with alternate broadcasts of the men's and women's games.
