CATONSVILLE, Md.—The Harford men's basketball team broke a two-game losing skid as they earned a 71-63 win over Catonsville, on the road on Wednesday night. The victory was the Fighting Owls' (9-16, 4-11 MDJUCO) second conference win since defeating the College of Southern Maryland on Jan. 23, while the Knights (1-24, 0-15 MDJUCO) remain winless in the conference.
Freshmen Lionel Perkins (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) and Jesse Volk (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) each tallied 14 points for the Owls, with Volk adding eight and Perkins recording seven rebounds. Freshman Troy Burgan (Akron, Ohio/North) added 10 points for Harford and totaled seven steals on the night as well.
Lovell Kush was just one point away from a double-double with nine points and 14 rebounds, while Pat Jefferson led the team with 15 points and added seven rebounds.
Harford jumped to a 4-0 lead to start the first half, and never let go of that lead, building a 40-26 lead by the half.
The Knights came within one point of the Owls on just two occasions in the first period, but Harford finished the half on a 7-1 run in the last 3:45 to take a 14-point lead into the break.
Harford held a steady, double-digit lead for the majority of the second half, until a 6-0 run over two minutes trimmed the Catonsville deficit to nine, 61-52 with 6:53 remaining.
After some back and forth scoring, Davon Herbert's fast break layup off a turnover by freshman Kevin Mead (Fawn Grove, Pa./Kennard-Dale) cut the Harford lead to seven, 65-58 with 3:21 to play and a minute later Brandon Baylor's free throw cut the lead even more, to six, 59-65.
The Owls converted on 6-of-10 free throws down the stretch, while holding Catonsville to just two buckets as they earned the 71-63 win.
The Fighting Owls finish out regular season competition and a three-game roadstand when they travel to Prince George's on Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. game.
