BEL AIR, Md. - The Harford men's soccer team (4-2-0, 1-2-0) stayed unbeaten at home and earned its first MDJUCO win of the season with a 4-1 decision over Cecil (0-4-0, 0-2-0) on Friday afternoon. Jacob Duarte had a hand in three of the team's four tallies.
The Fighting Owls dominated the field from start to finish, taking a 2-0 lead into halftime with a pair of goals less than six minutes apart. In the 33rd minute, Derek Hyde sent a laser past the goalie from 30 yards out off a well-placed centering feed from Brian Connelly to give Harford a 1-0 lead. It marked the sixth time in six games this season that Harford has scored first.
Then, just 5:32 later, Duarte punched in the game-winning tally, his fourth game-winning goal of the season, after Bryan Carnaggio's initial shot was saved by the keeper. The Cecil goalie lost control of the ball in the box and Duarte powered the ball into the back of the net.
The Fighting Owls didn't rest as the second half started. After a Seahawk foul near midfield awarded Harford a free kick, Brenton Violante squibbed the ball to a roaming Duarte. The 6-foot midfielder flipped the ball over his shoulder, past the defender just outside the box to a streaking Aaron Krauss. Krauss, playing in his first contest of the season beacuse of an earlier injury, rifled the ball into the corner for a commanding three goal lead.
With 15 minutes reamining in the contest, a Cecil defender, Chase Gavan, snuck behind the back line and beat Harford goalie George Tsakiris for Cecil's lone tally of the game. It was just Cecil's ninth shot of the game, compared to Harford's 24 tries.
Duarte earned his first multiple-goal game of the season when Connenlly set him up for a pretty bender in the 83rd minute, making the final score 4-1.
Duarte finished with a pair of goals and an assist, while Connelly added two helpers in the win. Tsakiris made five saves to improve to 3-2-0 on the year.
