The Fighting Owls and Panthers prep for the final home doubleheader at the Susquehanna Center. After the season, the athletic department will begin the renovation of the building that will be completed for the 2012-13 season.
Harford has enjoyed a 6-4 record at home. Five of the six victories have been one-possession games coming out in favor of the Fighting Owls. The lone game that did not come down to the final possession was the last game, where Lionel Perkins netted a season-best 30 points in a 75-61 victory over Nassau on MLK Day.
Points In The Paint
* The Fighting Owls are riding a two-game win streak after a home blowout over Nassau and a narrow conference win at Southern Maryland.
* Harford played total team basketball the last time they were at the Susquehanna Center, sharing the ball and playing solid team defense in the 14-point home win.
* The Fighting Owls shot a blistering 56.0 percent from the floor against Nassau on MLK Day, including an amazing 60.7 percent (17-for-28) in the first half.
* Lionel Perkins leads the team with 17.6 points per game. He tallied a season-high 30 points against Nassau on 11-for-14 shooting. His career-high 31 point effort came the last time Baltimore City and Harford met at the Susquehanna Center.
* Brandon Selby leads the team with six double-doubles. He tallied one in his last game and three in his last six contests. Harford is 4-2 when he records the feat.
* Adam Fongyen is averaging 10.7 ppg and 10.3 rpg over his last seven contests. He tallied a career-best 21 points and 22 rebounds with eight assists on Jan. 6.
* Jada Johnson is averaging 10.2 ppg while playing the point guard position.
* Jeff Joynes has totaled double digits in five of the last six games, including a 34-point effort in a home win over St. Mary's.
Different Heroes
Harford has had a different hero basically every night during this season. The Fighting Owls have five players who average at least 9.8 ppg and have had 10 different players reach double figures at least once this year, while seven different players have led the team in scoring.
The team's leading scorer is
Lionel Perkins with 17.6 ppg, and he has totaled at least 20 points on seven occasions, including a season-high 30 in his last home game.
However,
Jeff Joynes owns the highest single-game point total of the season with his 34-point effort in a come-from-behind win over St. Mary's earlier this month. He ranks second on the squad with 10.9 ppg.
Brandon Selby has a team-high six double-doubles and has led the team in rebounding seven times.
A Special Season
The 2010-11 season has been dedicated to the memory of Devonte Bundley.
The freshman student-athlete tragically passed away during the first day of practice.
On opening day, Harford honored Bundley by giving his family his Harford basketball sneaker, a signed team photo and his official Harford No. 21 jersey. The Athletic Department also announced that it will be officially retiring his No. 21 jersey.
As a sign that Devonte will be with the team all year, the coaching staff will place his white jersey on the bench at every game, both home and away.
Both the men's and women's Fighting Owl basketball teams will wear a black No. 21 sticker on their right sneaker all season in his memory.
Close Calls At Home
The Fighting Owls have won six games at home, and with the exception of their latest victory, all five have been one-possession games.
The first three contests at home came down to the final possession, with the visitors having a shot to tie or take the lead as time expired in each instance.
On opening day, Gloucester had two attempts to tie the game inside the paint, but both came up short. Against Salem, Adam Fongyen blocked a final attempt from 17 feet away as the buzzer sounded.
Against Delaware County, the visitors had a 3-point attempt blocked by a pair of Fighting Owls as the final seconds ticked off the scoreboard.
In December, Germantown had a pair of shots fall short in the final seconds of a two-point loss.
However, the most exciting contest was against St. Mary's on Jan. 6, which Harford won 88-83 in overtime. The Fighting Owls fought back from an 18-point deficit with just five players and
Jeff Joynes connected on a fast-break layup with 6.3 seconds left to force overtime.
Harford didn't take the lead until the final minute of overtime when Adam Fongyen and
Keegan Harper connected on back-to-back triples to ice the visitors.
Double-Double Trouble
Selby leads the team with six, including three in his past six games. Against Chesapeake and St. Mary's, when the Fighting Owls only had five healthy bodies, Selby collected a double-double in both games while playing with four fouls for over 14 minutes in both contests.
Fongyen has averaged 10.7 ppg and 10.3 rpg over his past seven games where he has collected three double-doubles. He has five this year.
Perkins recorded his first career double dip with 30 points and 10 boards against Nassau on Monday.
Brotherly Love
While the women's team has a pair of twin sisters that play on the hardwood, the men's team's sibling situation is between a starting forward and the head coach.
First year head coach Brian Selby, 25, is five years older than his brother, Brandon, who nearly averages a double-double with 10.6 points per game and 7.8 rebounds per game.
Brian starred at Harford during the 2004-06 seasons. He was named to the 2006 All-Region team after helping to lead the team to an eight-win improvement during his sophomore campaign.
For his efforts, Selby was named the Male Athlete of the Year at Harford. He finished that year with 15.3 points per game, 6.2 rebounds per game and 4.1 assists per game.
After his Fighting Owl playing career ended, Selby transferred to Bemidji State, where he played for two seasons.
