Men's Soccer Mounts Comeback To Claim Battle For First

BEL AIR, Md. - In a battle of the top two men's soccer teams in MD JUCO play, it was the Fighting Owls who laughed last. Harford (8-2-1, 6-0-1) scored five unanswered goals en route to a 5-2 victory over Rockville (7-1-3, 5-1-1) at Harford Stadium on Tuesday.

The Knights scored five minutes into the game and one minute into the second half, but the Fighting Owls adhered to head coach Jason Muffoletto's halftime adjustments and ran away with the contest, handing Rockville its first loss of the season and taking a one-game lead in conference play.

Brendan Cole scored Harford's first goal in the 50th minute, his fourth goal in his last two games, as Chris Panian was credited with the assist. Harford kept pressing the ball forward and Glenn Grove lofted a long ball over the defense to a waiting Panian who found the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2 just four minutes later.

Gabe Kuhn collected the ball in front of the net and blasted it past a diving keeper for the game winner in the game's 60th minute. And just like that, the Fighting Owls were flying high. Kuhn later sent another long ball over the defense and a speedy Jacob Duarte raced away for the nail in the coffin.

The prettiest goal of the night came in the 87th minute when Grove and Panian worked a two-man game in the corner, then Panian sent a cross to Brenton Violante, who fired it into the net.

Justin Brooks entered the game in the second half and made four saves to improve to 4-2-1 on the year. Andrew Bodt made three saves in the opening stanza. The defensive back line of Brian Connelly, Kevin Connelly, Jahlil Gage and Brent Mooney shifted the momentum in the second half, limiting Rockville's scoring chances and providing the pressure for the offensive explosion.

The Fighting Owls host Anne Arundel on Thursday in their annual Think Pink event, co-hosted by Upper Chesapeake Cancer LifeNet. The women's team plays at 5 p.m. followed by the men at 7 p.m. All proceeds will help raise funds and awareness for Breast Cancer.
