BEL AIR, Md. - The Harford men's soccer team (1-0-0) had been bottled up after three postponements due to Hurricane Irene. On Thursday, they were firing on all cylindars en route to a 6-0 victory in the season opener against Delaware Tech-Terry at Harford Stadium.
The Fighting Owls outshot the Hawks 30-1, scoring three goals in each half in the win. Five different players scored the six goals, including four players netting their first career tallies.
Patrick Maher got the scoring started in the 18th minute off a rebound shot from
Gabe Kuhn. Four minutes later
Brent Mooney found himself alone in front of the net as he tapped in another rebound.
Glenn Grove made it a 3-0 advantage after besting four defenders on the goalline with nifty footwork and beating the keeper inside the near post.
Brendon Cole scored his first of the season after halftime, and
Chris Cheelsman netted the final two goals for the 6-0 score.
Felipe dos Santos and
Nick Raivel earned their first collegiate points, assisting Cheelsman in the 87th and 88th minute, respectively.
Andrew Bodt earned the win in net, making one save in the first half.
Justin Brooks played the final 45 minutes, but did not face a shot.
The Fighting Owls travel to Burlington for the second game of a doubleheader with the women's team on Friday. The men's game starts at 4 p.m.
