Box Score BEL AIR, Md. - The Harford women's soccer team (7-5-4) saw its season come to an end in the Region XX Semifinal Round after losing to CCBC Essex (7-6-2) in PK's, 3-1. The Fighting Owls and Knights were tied at 2-2 after 110:00 minutes of play, and CCBC Essex's goalie Kaitlynn Red made three saves in the penalty kick stage to end Harford's season.
The Fighting Owls fell behind 1-0 early in the contest, but took a 2-1 lead in the second half after a pair of goals in a five-minute span.
Brianna Worthington evened the score at 1-1 off an assist from
Rachel Keeley's through ball. Moments later, Keeley made three swift moves through the defense and then fired a laser from 35 yards out for the nicest goal of the tournament to give Harford a 2-1 lead.
With 13 minutes remaining, Essex's Augustyniak scored her second goal of the game after a flurry to the left side of the net. Harford's
Maggie Shifflett challenged the attempt outside of the box, but the Knight forward chipped it over her head for the equalizer.
In the final moments of regulation, the Fighting Owls had a chance to end it prior to the extra sessions after a foul in the box. Kori Carroll was awarded a penalty kick but shot it wide. Only Harford threatened in the overtime, but to no avail. Both of the Fighting Owls scoring chances went wide, setting up the penalty kick stage.
The Fighting Owls went first, and
Kerri Valladares' shot to the left was saved. Next up, Tiffany Rolfes shot one off the right post.
Christina Verzi's shot to the left was saved again by Red, and Essex took the 1-0 advantage after Schanbarger scored in the upper 90.
Cella Cerrato evened things up, but Augustyniak gave Essex the 2-1 advantage. Red made a save on Worthington's attempt to set up Gain for the game-winner.
CCBC Essex advances to the Region XX Final to face top-seeded Southern Maryland on Saturday. The loss for Harford ends their season and marks the first time in five years that the Fighting Owls did not reach the Region XX Finals.
