Volleyball Sweeps BCCC In Region XX Action

BEL AIR, Md. - In the lone regular season matchup between the only Division I teams in Region XX, Harford reigned supreme over Baltimore City with a home sweep on Wednesday. With the win, the Fighting Owls improved to 6-1 for the second-straight season.

A pair of fantastic freshmen were the stars of the evening, as Lexie Roberts and Abby Claborn propelled the Fighting Owls to the important victory. Roberts had a match-high 17 kills while attacking at a .364 clip, and Claborn paced the offense with 24 assists, also a match-best. The dynamic duo also accounted for eight and six digs, respectively.

Sophomore Brandi Smith had a stellar night with seven kills and a .455 hitting clip. Classmates Maddie Hewitt and Rachel Jirsa chipped in defensively with nine and seven digs. Freshman Ashley Joyner had two kills, two digs and two block solos in the win.

Overall, the Fighting Owls attacked at a .212 clip (35 kills & 17 errors in 85 attempts) while the Panthers hit -.063 (15 kills & 20 errors in 79 attempts). In the second set, Harford jumped out to a 21-4 lead thanks to a tremendous offense set, .522 (13 kills & 1 error in 23 attempts).

"This was a big win because it was a conference game," Roberts said, "but it also gave us confidence for the postseason, knowing that this is the team that we will face next month."

The Fighting Owls (6-1, 4-1 MD JUCO) travel to Baltimore City for the first-ever Region XX DI Championship on Oct. 26. Their next contest, however, is at Frederick on Friday at 6 p.m.
