BEL AIR, Md. - Behind a raucous home crowd inside the APGFCU Arena, the No. 5 Harford men's basketball team exploded into the 2013 MD JUCO Semifinals with an 87-76 victory over No. 4 Prince George's. The Fighting Owls scored 34 of the games final 48 points to advance.
After a thunderous dunk from PG's DeAndre Leatherwood, the PG Owls celebrated in front of the Harford bench with a 64-54 lead with 9:24 remaining. Less than a minute later, reserve center
George Cooke kick started a 10-0 run to tie the game, part of a 34-14 run to end the game in Harford's favor.
The home crowd ignited the defense and Dimitrious Jelen-Joy,
Colby Giacubeno,
Carlos Brown and company shot 51 percent from the floor after the break en route to the comeback.
Jelen-Joy led all scorers with 22 points, despite sitting in the first half with three fouls. Cooke came off the bench to narrowly miss his first double-double with eight points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots.
Giacubeno added 18 points, while Brown had 14 and
Dwayne McGill 11. Despite suffering a major disadvantage on the height-chart, Harford held its own in the paint and on the glass, especially in the second half. Jelen-Joy had nine caroms while Brown owned eight boards.
Harford shot 13-of-19 (63.4 percent) from the free throw line in the second half, while PG was 12-of-24 (50.0 percent).
Harford advances to their first ever MD JUCO Semifinal contest against No. 9 CCBC Catonsville, who toppled top-seeded Baltimore City, on Saturday at 6 p.m.
