BEL AIR, Md. - Harford freshman
Jasalyn Denkins buried a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Fighting Owls a 74-71 victory over Volunteer State on Saturday in a seesaw affair.
The two teams traded lay-ups in the final minute of action and VSU's Jenice Davis' bucket tied the score at 71-71 with 30 seconds left. Harford held for one shot, but the Pioneers stuffed the team's play forcing Denkins to ad lib. She gathered the ball and put up a triple with the clock winding down and hit nothing but net for the win.
Denkins finished with a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds while
Ashley Smith had a game-high 28 points on 11-of-22 shooting with six rebounds and five assists. Ashley Hightower connected for 14 points and eight rebounds.
The Fighting Owls led by as many as 15 in the second half but the Pioneers chipped away at the lead with strong second-half performances by Davis and Shenequa Foster.
Harford travels to the Brunswick Christmas Classic for three games in three days in Brunswick, N.C. from Dec. 17-19.
