BEL AIR, Md. - The Harford women's soccer team (0-1-0) dropped its season-opener to ASA (1-0-0) on Wednesday, 2-1. The Fighting Owls controlled the final 20 minutes, netted a goal, but their comeback effort came up just short.

Jessica Smith netted Harford's lone tally in the game's 77th minute after the Avenger goalie and defender misplayed an outside cross. Smith took control and found the back of the net for her second career goal. The Fighting Owls continued to control the flow of the second half, but Dominique Jackson made seven saves to thwart Harford's effort to extend the contest.

The Avengers scored 2:01 into the contest on a long strike from Nicole Mars. Laus Araujo added the game winner in the 39th minute on a bullet of a free kick.

Harford hosts CCBC Essex on Sept. 5 at 4 p.m.
