BEL AIR, Md. - The sophomores would not let the Harford volleyball team go down on Sophomore Night as the Fighting Owls scratched out a 3-1 victory over Allegany on Monday. The victory gives Harford a leg up on finishing in no worse than second place in the MD JUCO Standings.
Haleigh Plummer hammered out back-to-back kills to close out the match and
Tiyana Bumbray turned up her serving game to help flip a 20-17 deficit to a 25-22 victory in the fourth and final set of the night. Bumbray's lasers on four straight points gave Harford the lead 21-20 before a mini back-and-forth battle ensued. Plummer smashed home a winner to give the home team a 22-21 lead before a pair of errors on each side made the score 23-22 in Harford's favor.
On the next point, Plummer's attempt in the corner went out of bounds and was initially ruled a point for Allegany, but after a referee's discussion, the ball was ruled out off of the Trojans on the attempted block. Plummer's next attempt was the hammer that ended the match.
Plummer finished with 10 kills, the third time this season that she has reached double figures. Bumbray led all players with 16 kills and added 17 digs for her fourth double-double of the season.
Braquelle Horton made her Sophomore Night memorable by setting the single season dig record in the first set. She ended the match with a match high 23 digs and currently sits at 339 this season, besting the previous school record of 328 set by
Victoria Karayinopulos in 2013.
Morgan Tennant also set a single season record on the evening. The setter dished out 35 assists, her second-most this season, to give her 590 assists, besting the old mark of 586 set by
Fabiana Della-Monica in 2013.
Alicia Horton and
Alexis Goldston were making their presence felt on the defensive side of the ball, they combined for 11 of the team's 13 blocks. Horton had a pair of solos while Twiggy added one, but they combined for four block assists together early in the match.
Britney Fleming set a new career-high with 12 digs and led the team with three service aces in the win.
The Fighting Owls close out the conference portion of their schedule at Garrett on Friday at 6 p.m. A victory over the Lakers will secure at least second place for the Fighting Owls.
