Hoops Teams Go For History Tonight

ROCKVILLE, Md. - Both of the Harford basketball teams will try and make history tonight when they play in the 2015 MD JUCO Championship Games. After a few days of delays, the No. 2 women's team will tip off against No. 4 Hagerstown at 6 p.m. followed by the No. 7 men's squad challenging top-seeded Frederick at 8 p.m. at Montgomery College.

This marks the second time in three seasons that both teams are playing for the conference crown, but both teams are in search of their first MD JUCO Championship.

At the beginning of the new year, the teams were going in opposite directions. The women were rolling after sweeping three wins at the Brunswick Christmas Tournament, but the men dropped eight-straight contests and stumbled into the holiday break.

But as the calendar changed to 2015, a point guard was added to both active rosters and the results have been staggering. The two teams are a combined,25-3 since January 3 since Jazmin Johnson stepped on floor for the women and Brandon Spain became healthy for the men.

For the women's team, tonight marks the third consecutive MD JUCO Championship Game appearance.,The Fighting Owls will try to do one of the hardest things in basketball, defeat someone for the third time in one season, when they face the Hawks (19-8). Harford traveled to Hagerstown for a conference contest on January 26 and came away with an 88-74 victory behind a career-high 42-point effort by Jazmin Johnson. Eight days later, the Hawks came to the APGFCU Arena for a non-conference tilt, and the Fighting Owls held on for a 72-64 win as Johnson again led all scorers with 23 markers.

The Fighting Owls earned their third-straight trip into the MD JUCO Championship Game behind a pair of total team efforts in the Quarterfinals and Semifinals. Ashley Hightower, was declared the X-Factor by interim head coach Michael Seney prior to the tournament and she has more than responded. The sophomore forward has averaged 15.0 PPG and 19.0 RPG in the two wins, including a career-high 24-rebound effort in the Semifinal win over No. 6 Montgomery.

Six Fighting Owls reached double figures in the Quarterfinal win over No. 7 Prince George's led by Hightower and Ashley Smith's 16 points. In the Semifinal win, Johnson led all scorers with 22 markers and Smith chipped in with 20.

On the men's side, the Fighting Owls bring the longest win streak into the Championship Game that includes a 73-69 victory over tonight's opponent, the Cougars.,The Fighting Owls scored eight of the final 10 points over the last two minutes to secure the win. Brandon Spain led the charge with 20 points while Jon Warren added a dozen. Cameron Smith had 11 and Exzavier Cooper just missed his fifth-straight double-double with eight points and 14 caroms.

The men reached the finals with a pair of close battles. The Fighting Owls scored the final 12 points in the last 2:37 of a 63-52 win over No. 2 Garrett in the Quarterfinals.,Spain, recorded a double-double with 24 points and 14 rebounds and kick started the decisive run.,Trailing 52-51, the sophomore netted nine of his game-high 24 points in the spurt, including a 3-pointer with 1:38 left to give the Fighting Owls cushion. He was also 4-for-4 from the line in the final moments.

As thrilling as that victory was, the Semifinal win over No. 3 CCBC Dundalk topped that with its dramatics as Cedric Hines connected on a game-winning 3-pointer with 0.7 seconds left to give the Fighting Owls a 66-63 victory.,With the score tied 63-63, the Fighting Owls called timeout with 12 seconds left after corralling an offensive rebound to set up one final shot. The play was designed for Spain,to drive to the basket, but when the defense collapsed on him, he kicked the ball out to an open Hines who buried the game-winner with under a second remaining.
