Box Score BEL AIR, Md. - In a battle of two of the top three women's lacrosse teams in the nation, the No. 2 Onondaga Lazers (4-0) outlasted the No. 3 Harford Fighting Owls (2-1), 15-11.
In a contest of runs, the Lazers ended the game on a 3-0 run to pull away from a charging Harford squad. After falling behind 6-2, the Fighting Owls scored the final five goals of the first half to take a one-goal lead into the break. Onondaga opened the second stanza on fire, scoring six consecutive goals to take a 12-7 lead with 15:12 remaining.
But the Fighting Owls would not go away, scoring four-straight to pull within one at 12-11. After the Lazers scored on a free-position shot with with 6:52 left, the Fighting Owls won another draw control and had three chances to stay in it, but Onondaga's Sophia Wojnovich made three-straight saves to thwart the comeback bid.
Lauren Haggerty led the Fighting Owls with four goals and one assist while
Karley Bush netted three goals. The Fighting Owls won the draw control battle 20-7, with Haggerty pulling in 15.
The Harford defense was stingy in both halves, shutting the potent Lazers offense down for the final 15:54 of the first half and a nine-minute stretch in the second half. One of the biggest defensive stops in the game came by
Brittany Bowman, when the
sophomore defender forced a turnover in front of the net that led directly to Megan Aro's goal to cut the lead to 12-11.
The No. 3 Fighting Owls host Erie CC on Sunday at noon.
