BEL AIR, Md. - The Harford softball team improved to 12-1 with a 15-run comeback in the nightcap of a doubleheader sweep over Frederick (6-8, 0-2 MD JUCO). Sophomore
Britney Fleming plated the game-winning RBI in the opener, 5-3, and in game two, she collected the game-tying RBI and ended the game with a walk-off home run to win 19-10 in six innings.
Harford 19, Frederick 10 (Gm2)Entering the sixth inning, the Fighting Owls trailed 10-6 before scoring 13 runs on eight hits. Eleven batters came to the dish before the Cougars were able to record an out, and by then, the led that FCC held throughout the contest was gone. Fleming came up with two outs and a runner on second base, needing an RBI single to end the game via the 8-run rule, but instead, the second baseman smacked a home run over the right-center wall for the climactic, walk-off winner.
After an error, a fielder's choice and a walk, the Fighting Owls used seven-straight singles to erase the defecit and claim the dramatic comeback. Fleming had five RBIs in the game, and three in the sixth inning alone.
Desi Joines (7-1) came in releif to earn the win. She pitched 4.2 innings and allowed a season-high seven hits and five runs, four earned. Every Fighting Owl collected a hit in the nightcap, led by
Mackenzie Fitzgerald's 4-for-5 performance with 4 RBIs.
Lindsey Fenner went 3-for-5 with three knocked in.
Frederick scored three runs in the first before the teams traded runs for the next few innings. The Fighting Owls totaled 19 hits in the win, but allowed a season-high 15 to the Cougars. The top-of-the order for FCC of Shelly and Caroline Morse combined to go 8-for-9 with seven runs scored in the loss.
Harford 5, Frederick 3 (Gm1)The Fighting Owls led throughout the opener, scoring two runs in the first and adding insurance runs along the way. Fleming tripled home Fenner in the fourth to extend the lead to 4-1 and singled home Fitzgerald in the sixth for an additional insurance run in the sixth.
Joines went the distance, scattering six hits for three runs, two earned. She totaled nine strikeouts on the day in 11.2 innings of work.Â
Tori Brooks hit the first of two home runs on the day, a long shot to centerfield in the third inning. Joines and
Fabiana Della-Monica collected first-inning RBIs in the win.
Harford travels to Southern Maryland on Monday.
