Hash Smashes Baseball To Sweep

BEL AIR, Md. - The Fighting Owls opened their home slate with a pair of wins against Jefferson (0-2) Sunday. Harford (3-3) took game one, 11-2, and finished off the sweep with a 9-3 win over the visiting Cannoneers.

Harford 11, Jefferson 2
Brett Hash led the way in a career game in the opener, going two-for-two with a triple and grand slam, tallying six RBI. The sophomore first baseman came up just short on a bid for the first homer of his career in the third inning when he crushed a pitch off the wall in center but had to settle for a triple. That drove in two, pushing Harford's lead to 4-1. He continued his power display in the fourth inning with the bases loaded, turning on a 1-2 pitch and driving it over the scoreboard in left field.

Third baseman Brandon Smith also had a big game. He went one-for-two at the plate with a triple and a sacrifice fly to drive in three runs on the day. Cannoneer right fielder Zachary Parilla attempted to make a diving catch on Smith's fly ball to right-center but came up just short, allowing the ball to roll all the way to the wall. Smith went into third standing up with a two RBI triple that put Harford ahead 2-1 in the first inning.

Middle infield pair CJ Young and Dominic DiSabatino were catalysts for the Harford offense. Young went two-for-three with a walk and two runs scored. DiSabatino drew a walk in all three of his plate appearances on the day, and scored three runs as well.

Right-handed pitcher Josh Silvestri was strong in his second start of the season. He gave up two runs (one earned) over five innings, allowing five hits and no walks. He struck out three en route to his first collegiate win. Austin Griffie came out of the bullpen to finish the game, pitching two scoreless innings. He surrendered a hit and walk and struck out a pair.

Harford 9, Jefferson 3
Hash continued his assault on Jefferson pitching in game two with his third extra base hit of the day, another two-run triple. It was his only at-bat in the game as he drew walks in his other two plate appearances. He finished the day going three-for-three with three walks, two triples, a home run and eight runs batted-in.

Young and Gilbert Peralta had big hits of their own in the night cap. Young went to the right-centerfield gap for an triple and picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly to center. Peralta lined a two-run double to left field and also had a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Young also scored two runs while Peralta scored one.

James English was on the hill for the Fighting Owls and got his first win of the season. He gave up two runs on four hits and a walk, while striking out six in four innings. Anthony Vattoune made his first appearance out of the bullpen, giving up a run on one hit while striking out two in two innings of work. Ben Collincini came on to pitch the seventh, allowing a walk in a scoreless frame.

After enduring numerous of postponements due to the snowy weather over the last two weeks, the Fighting Owls will play games every day for the next six days. The busy week begins Monday as Harford will host SUNY Adirondack for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
