BEL AIR, Md. - The 2015 Harford softball team swept Anne Arundel on Saturday to earn its 21st victory, setting the school record for wins in a season. The Fighting Owls won 8-2 and 18-10 to improve to 21-6 overall and 11-1 in the MD JUCO Conference.
Head coach
Erin Clary's bunch bested the previously published record of 20 wins in the 2002 season. This year's team, sitting atop the conference standings for the first time in program history, has 10 regular season contests remaining before the playoffs in North Carolina on April 24.
In the opener,
Desi Joines continued her amazing season, improving to 12-3, scattering four hits in the 8-2 win. She struck out 10 Pioneers, marking the eighth time this season she has reached double-digit strikeouts in a start. She currently leads the conference with 150 strikeouts, 84 more than the second-place pitcher. She allowed four hits and one earned run on Saturday.
Katie Shultz was the winning pitcher in game two, allowing 10 runs, but only one was earned. The Fighting Owls tied the score at 3-3 with a three-run home run by
Lindsey Fenner in the second inning. Harford would tack on six more runs in the frame that included a second three-run shot by catcher
Mackenzie Fitzgerald and never looked back. After Anne Arundel cut the lead to 11-10 in the top of the sixth, the Fighting Owls responded with a seven-run bottom of the frame.
Bethanie Cook led Harford with five hits on the day, while Joines, Fenner and
Fabiana Della-Monica all totaled four hits. Joines led the way with six RBIs.
Harford travels to Brookdale on Sunday.
