Baseball Sweeps Chesapeake

BEL AIR, Md. - Harford (26-5, 13-0 MD JUCO) swept a doubleheader against Region XX foe, Chesapeake (8-12, 2-5 MD JUCO) Friday afternoon. The Fighting Owls blasted six home runs to claw their way to a 12-8 win in game one and rode James English to 10-0 shutout win in game two.

Harford 12, Chesapeake 8
Harford hitters put on their most prolific power display at the plate in game one Friday afternoon. The Fighting Owls hit a season high six home runs against the Skip Jacks, boosting them to a conference leading 47 homers this season.

Harford fell behind 4-0 in the top of the first inning but responded immediately in the bottom half, scoring five to take a lead they would never relinquish. Dominic DiSabatino started things off, launching his sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot to dead center. John Mastrangelo and Joe Sheeran each hit RBI doubles to tie the game up and Sheeran stole third and came home on a throwing error to give Harford the lead.

Mastrangelo, Sheeran and Tanner Forry combined to hit three homers in the third inning. Mastrangelo and Sheeran went back-to-back with one out in the inning. Mastrangelo blasted his 10th long ball of the season, a two-two pitch deep to right field. Sheeran smacked an opposite field shot over the right field fence on a 1-0 pitch for his third of the season. Tanner Forry got in on the action two batters later, crushing his fifth home run of the season over the scoreboard in left field, giving Harford an 8-4 lead.

DiSabatino left the yard again in the fourth inning. The freshman short stop hit a solo shot over the wall in left center to give him seven home runs on the season. It was his second time this season hitting multiple home runs.

Not to be topped, Sheeran hit his second long ball of the game in the fifth inning, crushing an 0-1 pitch to center field. It was a much needed answer for the Fighting Owls after seeing their lead cut to just two runs in the prior half inning. It was Sheeran's fourth home run of the season and the first multi-homer game of his career.

Josh Silvestri (5-1) got the win on the mound for the Fighting Owls on a day where he was nowhere near his best. The right-hander gave up seven runs, all of which were earned, on nine hits and five walks. He battled his way through five tough innings, including a bases loaded jam in the opening frame in which it rained heavily.

Connor Reeves and DiSabatino came on to pitch an inning each to finish the game. Reeves gave up an unearned run in the sixth on two hits and a walk. DiSabatino went from short stop to the mound to pitch a perfect seventh with two strikeouts.

Harford 10, Chesapeake 0
James English (4-0) kept the Skip Jacks off balance for all five innings in game two, tossing a shutout to give the Fighting Owls another doubleheader sweep. The sophomore righty matched five hits allowed with five strikeouts without allowing a walk.

Brandon Smith led the offense, going 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs batted-in and two runs scored. His biggest hit was an RBI double high off the monster in left field that just missed being a home run by a couple feet.

Logan Mummert had the biggest hit of the game, smacking a line drive off the wall in left and legging it out for a triple with the bases loaded. The catcher went 1-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.

CJ Young went 2-for-4 in game one and 2-for-2 in game two to push his hit streak to 25 games. The sophomore second baseman is just three games from equaling the longest streak in program history, set by Shane Garrett in 2012.

Harford will host Prince George's after a three day break Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 at Harford Sports Complex.
