Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | by Paul Cottingham

Surge Protector: Fightin's Drop Cincy St.

BEL AIR, Md. – The Harford Women's Soccer team won its third game on the trot, using a three-goal outburst in the first half to outpace visiting Cincinnati State, 4-2 Saturday afternoon.

Harford (3-1) scored three times in a nine minute span to take an early lead in the first half. Angela Kuhn continued her string of dominant performances, scoring the first two goals of the game, her fifth and sixth of the young season. Both goals were the result of brilliant individual efforts by the do-it-all midfielder.

Kuhn scored the opener in the 12th minute after intercepting a pass at the halfway line and dribbling past a defender to make her own breakaway opportunity. Her initial shot beat Surge keeper Kelcie Lee but hit the post. Kuhn coolly retrieved her own rebound and shot into a wide open net.

Kuhn beat Lee from distance for her second goal just five minutes later. Like the first goal, the second one came after a quick change of possession in Cincinnati State territory. Dana Waskiewicz used her body to out-position and steal the ball from a surge midfielder and dished it to Kuhn. Kuhn dribbled past her marker and fired past another Surge defender from just outside of the 18-yard box. The shot deflected low off the far post over the goal line, beating Lee who appeared to be screened by the defender attempting block Kuhn's shot.

Najee Vick and Emily Naff combined to score the Fighting Owls third goal just minutes later. Vick did nice job beating her marker and dribbling to the edge of the 18-yard box from the left wing. She sent a low cross to the six-yard box and Naff beat a defender to the spot and got a toe on the ball to flick it in for her second goal of the season. The goal gave Harford a three goal lead and turned out to be the eventual game-winner.

The third goal turned out to be crucial for the Fighting Owls as Cincinnati State (3-2) hit back almost immediately with two goals of their own from their leading scorer Jami Pfeiffer. Pfeiffer received the ball on the wing, cut in and placed a shot perfectly in the far top corner to beat Jazmine Thacker in net for the Surge's first goal. Pfeiffer scored her second of the game and seventh of the season after receiving a perfect through ball from Brianna Mays. Again coming from the left wing, she was in alone on the keeper and poked the ball past Thacker at the near post with the outside of her foot.

Seeing their lead cut to just one goal in what seemed like an instant, the Fighting Owls had to dig in defensively. Thacker made some key saves, including a one-on-one stop to preserve the lead in the second half.

Naff and Vick helped put the game away for Harford, combining again for a fourth goal with two minutes left. This time the roles were reversed as Vick got on the end of a low cross from Naff and put it past the keeper with a first touch finish for her second goal of the season.

Harford will be home again Tuesday to play the opener of a doubleheader with Anne Arundel. Women's soccer kicks off at 4 p.m. followed by men's soccer, who play Anne Arundel as well, at 6 p.m. Both games are scheduled to be streamed live on Fighting Owl Vision.
