HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Monroe College started the day with a warm-up match as they dominated Baltimore City in the semi-finals with Baltimore City winning a combined 30 points in the entire match.
  • In the first set, a kill by Jenna Hathazi highlighted a 4-point run for the Fighting Owls to put the Mustangs on notice. But Monroe responded emphatically as Harford lost the first stanza.
  • The Fighting Owls came out really strong in the second set as they were up 11-8 off a Kyning Tillinghast kill with Julia Gatch providing two kills in the early goings of the set. However, Monroe once again fought back with a 5-point run and won the second set as well.
  • Unfortunately for Harford, the third set was much of the same as a kill by Phoenix Offutt put Harford ahead 10-9. After that, Monroe won six straight points and 10 of the next 11. The Fighting Owls did show a lot of fight as they made a comeback thanks to Mary Snow, Hathazi, and Gatch to close Harford within four points of the Mustangs. However, the ladies in blue were unable to complete the comeback as they saw their season come to an end.

GAME NOTES
  • With only two Division I volleyball teams in Region 20, Monroe College from Region 15 gets moved to the Region 20 tournament annually.
  • Tillinghast, Gatch, and Hathazi all tied for the team lead with three kills each in the match.
  • Tillinghast and Hannah Roussey each had 10 digs with Rebekah Hanshaw close behind with 9.
  • With 21 wins this season, the Fighting Owls tie the 2013 team for the most wins in a single season for the program.

UP NEXT
  • Harford's season is over as they will have to say goodbye to graduating sophomore Phoenix Offutt and her three years of being a wonderful member of the volleyball team.
  • However, with the rest of the team consisting of freshman players, coach Will Wheeler and the Fighting Owls volleyball program looks to be in great shape for the 2017 season.
