OT Again: Men Set To Defend After Upset

McHENRY, Md. - Overtime was needed for the second-straight night, but the Harford men's basketball team advanced to the MD JUCO Championship Game by upsetting top-seeded and host Garrett on Saturday, 96-91.

After almost letting it slip away in the final ticks of regulation for the second consecutive night, the Fighting Owls' defense stepped up, spurring a 9-0 run to ruin the Lakers night. Davonte Williams tied it with two freebies before the Fighting Owls got the first of three consecutive huge defensive stops. Jon Warren drove and scored followed by another stop. Evason Ogbonna swished a jumper, the defense picked up another one-shot trip and Aaron McDonald buried a triple to basically clinch the win.

With 29 seconds left in regulation, Harford led by four and had a free throw after an and-one option for Jalen Thompson. Thompson missed the chance and Garrett grabbed the rebound. Cedric Hines then was whistled for a foul in transition, didn't like the call and was issued a technical foul, giving the Lakers four free throws and a chance to tie.

Garrett connected on the first three freebies, missed the fourth but got the offensive board and added a quick layup for an 80-79 lead. After a timeout, Jon Warren had a lay-up blocked with four seconds left, corralled the rebound and was fouled on the put back with 0.7 seconds left. Warren missed the first and nailed the second to force the extra session.

Ogbonna led five Fighting Owls in double figures with 24 points on 8-of-11 shooting and four blocks. McDonald had 16 and Warren netted 14 while Williams and Jay Johnson had 13 and 10, respectively, off the bench.

The Fighting Owls go for back-to-back MD JUCO Championships on Sunday at 3 p.m. against No. 3 Montgomery.
