Lone Star Show: Women Claim Region Crown

BALTIMORE - The team that perhaps has received the smallest amount of respect across the nation is headed to the largest state in the continental United States.

The Harford women's basketball team trounced rival Baltimore City to claim its third-straight NJCAA Region XX Championship on the Panthers' home floor on Thursday, 81-46, officially punching its ticket to the NJCAA Division I National Championship for the first time in school history.

Though it was a total team effort all season long, Thursday night's Lone Star was Daisa Harris, and there was nothing that BCCC could do about it. Possibly still feeling slighted from losing MD JUCO Player of the Year to Baltimore City's She'cquan Bailey, the Fighting Owl point guard took her feelings out on the Panthers' star from the opening tip.

Harris scored 29 points on 13 made field goals with eight assists and five steals, but she was an absolute force while guarding Bailey, holding her scoreless while the Harford leader was on the floor. Bailey finished with three points (all when the contest was well in hand and Harris had made her curtain call in the fourth) on 1-of-8 shooting and seven turnovers. The three points was her lowest point total of the season, worst than the nine points Harris and Harford held her to in the MD JUCO Championship, her previous season-low.

Another Fighting Owl freshman who was exceptional in the title game was Dominique Walker. The forward had 10 points, 17 rebounds, seven steals and four blocked shots in the win.

Overall, the Fighting Owls had 22 assists on 29 made buckets and forced 30 turnovers while collecting 22 steals. After a slow and sloppy start that saw Harford score just 12 points, head ocach Mike Seney's squad responded with 25 point quarters in the second and third stanzas. Despite the 12-point first quarter on the offensive end, the Harford defense was stingy all night long, never trailing and leading 12-6 at the end of one. They held the Panthers to 10 points in the second quarter and 12 in the third.

Darra Walker chipped in with 13 points and three triples while Mia Fitts netted eight with four assists and four steals.

The Fighting Owls next go for the NJCAA District III Championship at ASA on March 4 at 8 p.m. Both teams are headed to the NJCAA Championships in Lubbock, Texas on March 14 regardless of the outcome on March 4.
