BEL AIR, Md. - The hottest team in college baseball did it again on Tuesday. The Harford Fighting Owls, winners of 26 of their last 27 games, hit a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to top Cecil, 5-3.
Harford improved to 33-7 overall and 19-1 in MD JUCO play with the dramatic win.
JP Vail's no-doubter down the rightfield line was his eighth longball of the season and Harford's 78th, the third most home runs in the nation.
The exciting finish overshadowed masterful pitching performances by both
Aaron Gress and
Josh Silvestri (6-0). Gress scattered five hits in six innings in his first career start. He struck out six and walked a pair. Silvestri entered in the seventh and allowed just one hit in three innings, picking up the win.
Joe Burton and
Daulton Weeks both totaled two hits in the win and Burton scored three times. He stole two bases and smacked a sinlge with one out in the ninth, one pitch before Vail's homer.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first, Harford evened the score in the second without a hit. Burton walked and stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch. Burton gave Harford a 2-1 lead in the fourth when he scored on
Ben Bomberger's single through the right side.Â
Cecil took the lead in the sixth, but it could have been a bigger inning if not for a head's up play by Bomberger in right. The first three Seahawks reached base with a walk and a pair of singles, the latter plating Julian Lopez to tie the game, 2-2. The next batter lofted a fly ball to rightfield, but Bomberger was able to track it down with runners on the corners. Joseph Zirolli scored on the sacrifice fly, but Richard Allen didn't think Bomberger could make the catch and wandered to far off the bag at first. The sophomore outfielder turned the double play and Gress recorded a groundout in his final pitch of the night to escape what could have been a huge inning.
The Fighting Owls, look to win their 15th-straight game on Thursday at 4 p.m. at home against Rowan-Gloucester.
