BEL AIR, Md. - The No. 15 Harford baseball team escaped with an 8-7 victory over Delaware Tech on Wednesday night for its 44th win of the year. The Fighting Owls committed more errors (6) than collected hits (5) in the comeback win.
Harford trailed 4-1, 6-4 and 7-6 before scoring two unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Ronnie Krsolovic started the two-out rally with a five-pitch walk after the Roadrunners got two outs on four pitches.
Ty Williams singled to second and Krsolovic slipped to third on a throwing error by the second baseman.
Toby Sponseller hit a towering fly ball between right field and second base but both runners were able to score to give Harford the 8-7 lead on the dropped pop-up.
Trailing 6-4, Sponseller connected on team home run No. 99 of the season, a pinch-hit solo blast to open the seventh inning to start the second of three comeback efforts in the win.
Dominic DiSabatino followed with a pinch-hit walk and reached third on a wild pitch. He scored on leadoff hitter
Jack Hamner's groundout.
A three-run sixth put Harford even at 4-4 despite only collecting two hits in the frame.
Joe Burton and
Kyle Burger singled after a pair of one-out walks by
Chase DeMars and
Daulton Weeks. Weeks and DeMars scored on Burton's single. Burton picked up one RBI on the laser to right field and Weeks' slide into third took out the Roadrunner third baseman and the ball squeaked away, allowing him to score. Burton advanced to second on the throw and came around on Burger's knock.
Andrew Carber pitched the eighth to earn the win and improve to 4-0.
TJ Pagan tossed the ninth for his seventh save of the year.
Aaron Gress received his third career start and pitched seven innings, striking out seven and walking one.
The Fighting Owls travel to No. 1 Gloucester on Thursday.
