Harford Holds Off Late ASA Charge, Win 70-64

Berry scores 17 to lead the way, Morton with 14

  • Opponent: vs. ASA Avengers
  • Score: #17 Harford 70 – ASA 64
  • Records: Harford 18-2 | ASA 10-5
  • Location: Bel Air, Md. - APG Federal Credit Union Arena
  • The Short Story: The Harford women's basketball team defeated ASA for a second time this season, this time in a much closer game as the Fighting Owls were just able to stave off a late charge by the Avengers. This time around, it was unusual stars as Alysha Berry scoring a season high 17 and Morton with her second most of the season with 14.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Both teams started out slowly, with the first points of the game being scored on a Caitlin Roche long range shot over three minutes into the game.
  • Dahnye Redd finally scored Harford's first points on a lay-up courtesy of a Daisa Harris dish over halfway through the first quarter.
  • Dominique Walker made an old fashioned three-point play to tie the game at 7-7 to kick off a Fighting Owls 6-0 run to close the first quarter with a 10-7 lead.
  • That run continued to 9-0 before ASA finally scored three minutes into the second quarter, but Danielle Durjan answered right back with a three pointer as Harford extended their lead to 16-9.
  • Alysha Berry caught fire in the second quarter where she scored all 11 of her first half points to lead all players. Berry scored just seven points in the first meeting between these two teams back in November.
  • Harford outscored the Avengers 27-15 in the second quarter and went into the break with a 37-22 lead.
  • Both Redd and Durjan picked up their fourth fouls early in the third quarter and were relegated to the bench for the rest of the stanza.
  • ASA was able to take advantage of Harford playing the majority of the third quarter with bench despite Joy Morton hitting a trio of treys as ASA trailed Harford by just 7 going into the final period.
  • Redd came back on the court to start the fourth quarter and dominated in the paint, picking up her 13th rebound on an offensive board and put back to extend the Fighting Owls lead to 56-46. However, Redd picked up her 5th foul with four minutes left in the game and fouled out for just the second time this year.
  • ASA once again took advantage of the opening and cut the Harford lead to just seven on Caitlin Roche's 20th point.
  • Alexia Douglas scored back-to-back layups and ASA was within striking range at 67-64 with under a minute left.
  • Morton was fouled on a loose ball foul and knocked down both free throws followed by a Durjan steal to seal the game for the Fighting Owls.
GAME QUOTES AND NOTES:
  • Harford head coach Mike Seney: "We were a little caught off guard with the defenses they were throwing at us, however we responded to it well. I can't be more proud of Morton and Berry who made so many shots to propel us to victory. Daisa Harris was constantly double teamed and you have to applaud our All-American for always making the right play to trust her teammates.
  • Harris scored 12 points and accumulated 6 assists in the game along with 7 rebounds and a couple of steals. She scored 32 points in the first meeting between these two teams and clearly ASA came in with a mentality to not let Harris beat them again.
  • Harford shot just 18% from the floor in the first quarter but improved to 55% in the second quarter.
  • All five of the Fighting Owl starters had two fouls in the first half.
  • Danielle Durjan fouled out late in the game; her first disqualification of the season.
  • Dahnye Redd tallied her 10th double-double of the season with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
  • ASA shot 7-20 from three point range, led by Caitlin Roche at 5-13.
UP NEXT:
  • The Fighting Owls will get back to their conference schedule as they hit the road to Montgomery College on Wednesday, January 25th for a 6 PM game.
  • The Raptors are 14-3 on the season and 7-1 in conference play with their lone conference loss coming to Baltimore City.
