Harford Earns Big Sweep at Frederick

  • The Short Story: The Harford baseball team swept one of their conference rivals thanks to a great day from the offense.

HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME 1

  • With the hype of a couple of Maryland Juco conference powerhouses going at it, game one lived up to the billing.
  • Ryan Shinn set the tone early for the Fighting Owls with a home run to deep left field.
  • After Frederick answered back with five runs in the bottom of the first, Harford tied the game up in the top of the third thanks to RBI doubles from Adam Rapp and Toby Sponseller.
  • Ryan Calhoun added a two RBI double in the bottom of the fourth to extend the lead, but Frederick hit a three-run home run in the bottom half to take the lead 9-8.
  • Harford responded in a big way in the bottom half with home runs from Peyton Sorrels, Luke Johnson and Adam Rapp to take a 13-9 lead.
  • The Fighting Owls added a few more insurance runs in the sixth inning which proved to be important as the Cougars scored runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
  • Shinn, Johnson, Rapp, Calhoun, Sponseller, and CJ Lopez all tallied multi-hit games with eight different Fighting Owls tallying an RBI.
  • Harford's pitchers struggled throughout the game, but side-arm specialist Reid Frazier closed out the game in the bottom of the seventh with a couple of strikeouts.
GAME 2
  • Will Reed threw a run-rule shortened, complete-game shutout victory as Harford completed a sweep at Frederick, 10-0. 
  • Reed struck out eight in the three-hitter, walking four, in the five inning game. 
  • Tre Todd led off the game with a home run and the Fighting Owls increased the lead to 5-0 in the third inning, which was keyed by an by Toby Sponseller's RBI double and Joe Schwartz's two-run triple.  
  • After tacking on a pair of runs in the fourth, Harford put the game away with a three-run home run in the fifth by Ryan Shinn
  • Todd, Shinn and Luke Johnson had two hits each for Harford while Ryan Calhoun walked in all four of his plate appearances.
  • The Fighting Owls have now won 13 games in a row to improve to 17-4 overall this season.
  • The team is 9-0 and in first place in the Md Juco Conference and has won 32 straight games in league play dating back to 2016.
UP NEXT
  • Harford will return home to face Erie on Sunday, March 26 at 12 PM.
  • Erie is 6-8 on the year after splitting a doubleheader on Saturday against CCBC Catonsville.
