Harford's 17 Game Win Streak Ended in Split

Fighting Owls lose season series to Mercer County 3-1

  • The Short Story: The Harford baseball team had their 17-game win streak snapped after Harford won the first game but were out scored in the night cap.

HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME 1

  • Fighting Owls starting pitcher Frankie Frashcetti earned the starting nod for just the second time all season and hurled five fantastic innings, scattering four hits and two walks with six strikeouts without allowing a run.
  • Both teams found runs at a premium as neither scored until a sacrifice fly by Ryan Shinn allowed CJ Lopez to score from third with Shinn advancing to third on an error by the center fielder.
  • Mercer responded back with a sac fly of their own in the bottom half off Reid Frazier.
  • Harford started a two-out rally in the seventh as Peyton Sorrels reached on an infield single with a hard hit ground ball that took a bad hop on the first baseman.
  • Toby Sponseller hit a sharp single to the right side that moved Sorrels to third followed by RBI singles from CJ Lopez and Tre Todd to give the Fighting Owls a 3-1 lead.
  • Frazier was able to take it from there as he allowed a couple of singles, but ultimately struck out the side to earn his second win of the season.
  • All four of the Fighting Owls' hits in game one came in the seventh inning with Lopez highlighting the offensive effort as he hit 1-1 with a couple of walks. 
GAME 2
  • The night cap had a much different feel to it as Harford had more home runs in game two then they had hits in game one.
  • Justin Fox struggled early and couldn't get out of the second inning as he gave up four hits and three runs in the inning, most notably a solo home run by Curbelo. 
  • Adam Rapp led off the third with a home run, his third of the season then Tre Todd hit a solo home run in the fourth to pull Harford to 4-3 for his his sixth home run of the season. 
  • After Mercer County answered back with a run in the bottom of the 4th, Luke Johnson hit a solo shot.
  • The game got away from the Fighting Owls in the fifth and sixth innings as Mercer County scored 2 in the fifthth and three in the sixth to take a big 10-4 lead.
  • The Fighting Owls mounted a rally in the 7th but came up a couple runs short.
  • Luke Johnson hit his second home run of the game and 10th of the season.
  • Ronnie Krsolovic drew a walk and Ryan Calhoun hit his third home run of the season.
  • After a sharp groundout by Sorrels, Toby Sponseller hit his fourtth home run of the season to pull the score to 10-8. 
  • Harford hit six home runs in the game including three in the seventh inning.

UP NEXT
  • Harford will travel to Dundalk to take on their conference rivals on Friday, March 30 with a 3:30 scheduled start time.
  • The Lions are 6-14 on the season and 2-4 in conference with wins against Catonsville and Prince George's.
