Fighting Owls Sweep Skipjacks

Harford slugs four home runs to rout their divisional foe

  • The Short Story: The Harford Baseball team took an early lead in game one to mercy rule the Skipjacks before the fifth inning. The Fighting Owls struggled early in game one, but came back to earn their second win of the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1

  • Peyton Sorrels started off the Fighting Owls with a hard hit single followed by Ryan Shinn, Luke Johnson and Adam Rapp each recording doubles to score the first two runs.
  • Ryan Calhoun knocked his fourth home run of the season, bringing Johnson and Rapp home to score three more runs. 
  • Chesapeake responded with a couple of singles to lead off the second, but a 4-6-3 double play and a Michael Devecchio strikeout ended the potential threat.
  • Johnson struck again in the bottom of the second with a bases loaded single on a hard hit single to left field that plated a couple of runs.
  • Rapp smashed an RBI double off the top of the center field wall followed by a Calhoun sac fly to put Harford up 9-0 after two innings of play.
  • Sorrels got things going again in the bottom of the fourth with a triple and then scored on an RBI single from Shinn.
  • Ryan Calhoun doubled with the bases loaded to score a couple more runs and John Mastrangelo drove in a couple more with an opposite field single.
  • Ryan Shinn got up for the second time in the inning and knocked out his 7th home run of the season for a three run bomb to give the Fighting Owls an 18-0 lead after four innings.
  • Briar Lauer relieved Devecchio in the fifth and allowed a few runs to score before closing out the game. 
  • Calhoun finished the game with six RBIs with Shinn close behind with five.

GAME 2

  • Chesapeake rolled with the momentum they started in the end of the first game with a trio of runs in the top of the first in the night cap.
  • Adam Rapp helped get one of those runs back in the bottom half with an RBI single to score Tre Todd.
  • Peyton Sorrels roped a double to right field and then scored on Ryan Shinn's eighth home run of the season to tie the game at 3-3.
  • Still tied 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth, Harford got it going as Rapp hit a 2 RBI single to score Shinn and Luke Johnson.
  • Toby Sponseller drove in Rapp with an RBI single and later scored after stealing third  and going home on a C.J Lopez RBI ground out.
  • The Fighting Owls were at it again in the sixth as Johnson hit laced a double to score Todd and Sorrels followed by Calhoun's second home run of the day to give Harford an 11-3 lead.  
  • After Will Reed threw five innings, giving up just three unearned rune with four strikeouts, Mike Taylor pitched the last two innings giving up no runs and tallying four strikeouts.


UP NEXT 

  • Harford will match up against Penn State-Mont Alto at the Harford Sports Complex on Monday, April 3 at 4 PM.
  • The Lions are 2-12-1 on the season and 0-1 in their conference.
