Harford Dominates Essex on Sophomore Day

Fighting Owls knock out seven home runs in the doubleheader

  • The Short Story: The Harford Baseball team overcame a bizarre first inning to overpower the Knights with 35 runs in the doubleheader sweep. The Fighting Owls honored their 17 sophomores between games for one of the best classes in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
 
  • In what turned out to be a bizarre game, Essex scored 10 runs in the top of the first with all of them being unearned due to a trio of errors in the inning for Harford.
  • Harford scrapped together a few runs in the second inning before Luke Johnson hit a two run homer in the third followed by a CJ Lopez RBI single to get the Knights lead down to 10-6.
  • The Fighting Owls went crazy in the fourth inning with a Peyton Sorrels home run, Johnson's second two run homer of the game and a Tanner Forry RBI triple to tie the game.
  • Tre Todd kept it going with a two run homer to deep right field and Ryan Shinn followed up with a two run bomb of his own before Forry hit a two RBI double to finish off the 12 run Harford inning.
  • Ahead 18-10 going into the bottom of the sixth, Toby Sponseller hit the sixth and final home run of the game for the Fighting Owls to end the game early.
  • Justin Fox threw two scoreless innings, giving up two runs with four strikeouts to earn his first collegiate win.
GAME 2
  • The Fighting Owls got out to a much better start in the night cap with a Luke Johnson double down the left field line who then scored on an Adam Rapp double to take an early 2-0 lead.
  • Nick Atkinson hit a leadoff triple in the bottom of the second and scored on a Ronnie Krsolovic RBI ground out.
  • Harford went on to score four more runs in the inning capped off by a Tanner Forry RBI double to score Johnson.
  • The Fighting Owls got things going again in the third with Atkinson hitting a leadoff single then stealing second and scoring on a Krsolovic double down the left field line.
  • Krsolovic wound up scoring on a Tre Todd double as Harford went ahead 9-0 after three innings.
  • Essex finally got on the scoreboard with a scrappy four runs in the top of the fifth to make it a 9-4 Harford lead.
  • Joey Schwartz hit a two RBI single in the bottom of the fifth then Ryan Shinn walked to load the bases for Johnson who ended the game on a mammoth grand slam to left field to end the game.
UP NEXT 
  • Harford will have no time to rest as they host ASA for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 29 starting at 12 PM.
  • The Avengers are 16-17-1 on the season including a 10-3 loss at Harford less than two weeks ago.
