HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With strong winds coming off the Great Lakes having a huge impact on the play of the game, Monroe got off to a strong start in the first half hour going with the wind.
  • Tribunes sophomore forward Elin Eklund scored her first goal on an unfortunate deflection off a Harford defender.
  • After Crystal Kline came up with a trio of big saves, Eklund struck again from the corner of the 18 yard box that found the far corner for goal number two.
  • With the Fighting Owls pushing back strong, they finally earned a pay off when Rachel Bohli's cross on a free kick found the head of Alexandria Adams with the ball finding the back of the bet just 20 seconds away from halftime.
  • Going with the win in the second half, Harford kept the ball on the Monroe side for the first 20 minutes of the second stanza despite Eklund completing her hat trick on a counter attack.
  • Down by two and with time ticking away, Harford pushed defender Alecia Rotunno forward and she immediately made an impact assisting on a Briana Stabile goal to cut the Monroe lead in half with 20 minutes to play.
  • In the 80th minute, Mackenzie Wills had a shot that was heading for an open net that was blocked away by the Tribunes defense in what appeared to be the tying goal.
  • With just a minute and a half left in overtime, a dangerous cross by Grace Humes was knocked around in the box until Alecia Rotunno was finally able to punch it home to send the exciting game into overtime.
  • The dream of completing the upset was dashed just a minute into the extra period as a cross was deflected by the Harford defense and despite Kline getting her hands on the ball, the side referee signaled for a controversial goal to end the game.
