Harford Sweeps Through Montgomery in Straight Sets

Fighting Owls win conference opener for seventh consecutive season

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a suffering five straight losses to some of the toughest teams on the east coast, Harford bounced back beautifully against a familiar opponent.
  • The Fighting Owls rode a four-point streak including back-to-back aces by Allie Hallameyer midway through the first set to take the lead at 11-7.
  • Savannah Meyers also had consecutive aces late in the first set that was closed out by a Jenna Hathazi slam to take the first set.
  • Montgomery won the first five points of the second set including three straight aces, but Harford answered back winning nine of ten points to take a 14-10 lead with Hallameyer adding a couple more aces.
  • The Raptors fought back to tie the game at 16-16, but Meyers stepped up with a pair of kills and a block.
  • Trailing 22-21, Hathazi nailed a crucial kill and Hallameyer aced to get Harford the lead back at 24-22.
  • Montgomery won the next point, but a service error handed the Fighting Owls a set two victory.
  • The Raptors jumped out to a 7-5 lead in the third set, but Harford won seven consecutive points with Meyers serving to set the tone for a dominating third set victory to close out the match.
GAME NOTES
  • Jenna Hathazi led the team with eight kills and 12 assists as she currently leads the Fighting owls in kills, assists, aces and block assists.
  • Savannah Meyers was close behind with seven kills while also adding a couple of blocks while Hathazi and Kyning Tillinghast once against shared the setting duties with 12 and 11 assists respectively.
  • The Fighting Owls have now won their last seven conference openers since a four set loss to Howard in 2010.
  • Harford has now defeated Montgomery in their last two contests with the Raptors last victory over the Fighting Owls coming in a five set thriller in 2015.
UP NEXT
  • Harford will continue their stretch of conference contests as they travel to play Howard on Friday, September 9 at 7 PM.
  • The Dragons are 3-2 this season with all of their contests occurring over the weekend in the Dragon Invitational that included a 3-2 victory over CCBC Essex and a 3-0 loss against Southern Maryland.
