Strong Finish Helps Harford Top Cecil

  • The Short Story: Harford saw two late runs finish off Cecil in a top of the conference back-and-forth contest. Cecil gave the Fighting Owls a tough run, even leading the game in the third quarter, but the firepower of Harford prevailed in a strong fourth quarter to pull away from the neighborly rivals.

 HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cecil's Tiana Garvin and Briana McAllister shot a combined 3-3 in the first quarter while the other six Seahawks were 0-13 from the field.
  • The Seahawks would clean up their act late in the second, finishing the quarter on a 15-4 run thanks to 10 points in the paint, two free throws and a dagger from long range by Chyna Steele.
  • After giving up the lead to Cecil late in the third, Harford would go on an 11-0 run thanks to a Janiece Loney three-pointer and a parliament of Fighting Owls contributing to the cause.
  • The Fighting Owl's would finish the game on a 14-5 run sparked by great point guard play by Shawnkia McCallum with four assists during the crucial stretch.
  • Harford and Cecil were both off from beyond the arc Thursday, going a combined 8-29 from three-point range. The Seahawks struggle from range is a rare sight so far this season, as they came into the game shooting a conference leading 34.9%.
  • The Fighting Owls and Seahawks struggled with their ball-handling throughout the game, combining for 64 turnovers with Harford earning 25 steals along the way.
  • Both squads also battled with foul trouble in the contest with Harford seeing a couple of key contributors in Joy Morton and Destinee McQueen fouling out.
  • Harford's Ryan Holder earned ultimate warrior status, playing all 40 minutes against Cecil. Holder contributed 11 points, pulled down 12 boards, dished out five assists and caused six turnovers in the Fighting Owls victory.
  • Shawnkia McCallum played in 35 minutes of the contest, scoring seven points while tallying 12 assists and five steals.
  • Janiece Loney and Destinee McQueen led the team in scoring with 13 points each. All nine of Harford's players scored at least three points in the contest.
  • Head coach Michael Seney now holds a 91-10 record as the Fighting Owls' lead man. He has won all 58 games against conference opponents in his tenure at Harford.
 UP NEXT
  • Harford will travel to Cumberland, Md. to face Allegany on Saturday, January 13th at 1PM.
  • The Trojans are 4-7 on the season and have not won a game in conference play this season. Their most recent contest saw them fall to Chesapeake College 84-58.
