Harford Tames Lions in Title IX Classic Opener

Washington, D.C. – The No. 22 Harford Fighting Owls kicked off the 2018 Title IX D.C. Classic opening round with a win, defeating the Nassau Lions 85-39, Thursday night inside the D.C Armory.

The victory improves Harford's record to 13-0 while also advancing them to the semifinals in the winner's bracket. Nassau drops to 8-3 with the loss.

Turning Point
Harford's 13-day layoff seemed to invigorate NJCAA Div. I leading scorer Dahnye Redd. The Fighting Owl forward could not be stopped on offense, sinking 4-of-5 looks in the first quarter to give Harford an early 21-5 lead.

Redd would carry over her hot start well into the second quarter, knocking down all eight of her attempts over the next 10 minutes to put the ladies in blue ahead by 34 points at the half.

When the dust settled Redd had record her 13th straight double-double, tallying 30 points and 12 rebounds in just 21 minutes of action.
Game Notes
  • Shawkina Mulazim led the team in assists with six, while also scoring six points and grabbing a half-dozen rebounds.
  • Jewel Porter finished just one point (9) and two rebounds (8) shy of a double-double.
  • Ayanna Mazyck led the team in steals (eight) while also tacking on eight points and 10 rebounds.
  • Harford attempted a season-low 71 shots in the contest.
  • The Fighting Owls 13-game win streak is its longest since the 2016-17 season.
  • Harford now holds a 3-0 record when playing at a neutral site.
  • The meeting between the Fighting Owls and Nassau is a first in Harford's modern era of record keeping (2008 – present).
