Late Surge Guides Harford to D.C. Classic Finals

Washington, D.C. – With a spot in the Title IX D.C. Classic finals on the line, the No. 22 Harford Fighting Owls edged out Monroe 68-61, Friday afternoon inside the D.C. Armory.

Harford remains undefeated at 14-0 with the win, while Monroe falls to 10-4.

Turning Point
Trailing 12-6 at the end of the first quarter, Harford would slowly make up the difference over the next 20 minutes of play to tie the game at 53-53.

The Fighting Owls eventually took over the lead with eight straight points to start the fourth, but the Mustangs fired off a 7-0 run of their own to come within a point. Monroe however never saw another field goal fall, as Harford allowed just one free throw in the final minutes while scoring seven points of their own to come away with the victory.

Game Notes
  • Dahnye Redd secured her 14th straight double-double (13 pts., 14 reb.) while playing in all 40 minutes of the contest.
  • Elaija DeMeza led all Harford players with 16 points.
  • Shawkina Mulazim earned a double-double (12 pts., 10 reb.).
  • Janiece Loney fired the Fighting Owls back into the game with her four threes, three of which coming in the second quarter while Harford trailed.
  • Harford drained a season-high 12 three pointers.
  • The Fighting Owls were whistled for a season-low eight fouls.

Harford takes on #3 Tallahassee Community College in the finals of the Title IX Classic, Saturday at 4 p.m. inside the D.C. Armory.

The Eagles claimed their first NJCAA Div. I National Championship last season and are currently on a 20-game winning streak dating back to last season.

Coming into the tournament, the Eagles were the number two ranked scoring team at 98.9 points per game while the Fighting Owls sit third with 97.8 points per game.
