Harford Splits Series With USC Sumter

  • Opponent: USC Sumter Fire Ants
  • Date: February 17-18
  • Scores:
    • Game 1: Harford 3 –  USC Sumter 13
    • Game 2: Harford 5 –  USC Sumter 1
    • Game 3: Harford 7 –  USC Sumter 5
    • Game 4: Harford 2 –  USC Sumter 8
  • Records: Harford 2-2  | USC Sumter 3-3
  • Location: Sumter, S.C.
  • The Short Story: The Fighting Owls mimicked last year's season opening series against USC Sumter, splitting a pair of doubleheaders with the Fire Ants over the weekend. After dropping their season opener, Harford went on to win games two and three thanks to a strong outing from starting pitcher Zach Guth and a big hit from Lou Testa. The men in blue would drop the series finale after scoring just two runs in game four.
  • Box Score:
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
  • Harford fell behind early as USC Sumter struck for six runs in the bottom of the second due to a few errors and a grand slam.
  • The Fire Ants tallied two more runs in the fourth with a two out homerun to give them an 8-0 advantage.
  • Sumter added five more runs in the bottom of the sixth thanks to three doubles and a triple to left field to bring the score to 13-0.
  • In the top of the seventh the Fighting Owls would show signs of life on offense. Down to their final out, Nick D'Amore would double to left to give Harford their first hit of the season.
  • After Jordyn Smith's walk and Lou Testa being hit by an errant pitch, Alex Barker stepped up with the bases loaded and pounded a triple to right field to bring home Harford's first three runs of the season.
  • Unfortunately the rally ended there as Harford's comeback attempt would end short.
GAME 2
  • The backend of the opening day doubleheader quickly turned into the Zach Guth show, as the transfer from the University of Maryland surrendered just one hit over five innings of work while striking out six.
  • Harford would string together five runs throughout the game, including an RBI double from Ryan Calhoun that opened the scoring.
  • Justin Fox closed the door on any chance of a Sumter comeback, giving up just one run off one hit while dealing a pair of strikeouts in two innings.
GAME 3
  • The Fighting Owls first three batters would reach base in the top of the first thanks to a walk, single and a fielding error.
  • A double off the bat of Lou Testa brought home a pair of runs to give Harford a 2-0 lead to start the contest.
  • After giving up a double and two walks, the Fire Ants found themselves in a bases loaded situation with no outs in the top of the third. Nick Delp's sacrifice fly to right brought in one runner, but Sumter would end Harford's rally with a pickoff and a strikeout.
  • USC Sumter grabbed a run back in the bottom of third, but the Fighting Owls would score a run in the fourth and fifth innings to make it 5-1.
  • The Fire Ants swung back to life in the fifth, scoring four runs off a pair of doubles and two walks to bring the score to 5-4.
  • Harford would answer in the next two innings, scoring a pair runs thanks to strong base running from Nehemiah Wright and Nick Rowland to boost their lead to 7-4.
  • Justin Fox would grab his first save of the season, closing out the seventh inning with a strikeout and a fly out.
GAME 4
  • Harford's bats cooled off in the final game of the series, scoring just two runs late in the game.
  • USC Sumter received a big boost in the form of a two run home run in the fourth to claim a 3-0 lead.
  • The Fire Ants grabbed an 8-1 lead after scoring one run in the fifth and four in sixth.
  • Much like in the series opener, the men in blue would attempt to spark a comeback in the seventh inning. Nick Rowland's pinch hit solo shot to left field closed the gap to 8-2, but Sumter shut down the next three batters to save a series split.
UP NEXT
  • Harford will get to enjoy their home opener as they host Mercer County on Sunday, February 25 at 11 AM.
  • The Vikings won three of their four meetings with the Fighting Owls last season, with the men in blue claiming a 3-1 victory in the first game of a doubleheader on March 29.
