Softball Drops Season Openers in Georgia

  • The Short Story: The Harford softball team lost a tough season opener on a walk off sacrifice fly that turned into a dramatic play at the plate. Emily Bowler pitched like an ace to keep Harford within striking distance of a really good Georgia Highlands team. Game two was a different story as the powerhouse Boll Weevils slugged their way past the Fighting Owls.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
  • Emily Bowler took to the circle to start the season for Harford as the sophomore ace showed excellent command all day long.
  • Georgia Highlands struck in the first inning on a shallow pop fly to center that landed in the Bermuda triangle to get the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
  • Harford answered back in the top of the third inning started by a two out walk of Chloe Moyer. Lindsay Bowler laced a single back up the middle to advance Moyer to third. Harford put on a double steal with L. Bowler taking second followed by Moyer beating the tag at home to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Emily Bowler really locked in after that and both teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the seventh.
  • With one out and a runner on third base, a fly ball to center was caught by L. Bowler. The Mustangs runner tagged up and took off for home as L. Bowler's throw one hopped perfectly to catcher Samantha Znamiroski, but the tag was just a hair too late as Georgia Highlands walked it off with a dramatic win.
GAME 2
  • After a long day of getting on the bus at 3 AM, flying from Maryland to Georgia, then playing softball, fatigue clearly took its toll in game two as Enterprise State hit early and often to beat Harford.
  • After giving up 8 runs in the bottom of the first, Harford got one back in the top of the second with Emily Bowler scoring on a Chloe Moyer RBI.
  • Harford would get doubles in the game by Olivia Gallimore and Samantha Znamiroski, but ultimately the powerful Boll Weevil bats defeated the Fighting Owls
UP NEXT
  • Harford will continue their trek in the south as they play three more games on February 9 against Southern Union, Andrew College, and East Georgia State starting at 12 PM.
