HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME 1
  • Harford put together one of their most complete performances of the season with a relentless offense of attack complimented by an excellent pitching performance by Zach Guth (8-0) who went the distance in a run-rule shortened shutout.
  • The Fighting Owls scored runs in every inning except the second. Calhoun and Schwartz hit back-to-back jacks to put an exclamation point on an efficient offensive display. Calhoun hit his second grand slam in as many days. It was his 10th of the season, besting his season total for 2017. Schwartz followed with a mammoth shot that flew well beyond the 371-foot wall in left center. He now has 11 home runs on the season.
  • Guth was in total control throughout five innings of two-hit ball. The only true scoring threat he faced came in the first inning when he stranded a runner on third, who reached base on a leadoff walk, with a swinging strikeout to end the inning. It was his second punchout of the inning. He finished the game with seven strikeouts against four walks.
  • The Fighting Owls' offense put up three runs in the first, four in the third, two in the fourth and six in the fifth. Harford continues to wreak havoc on the base paths, stealing 11 bases in the game. It is the fourth time they have hit double digits in steals in a game this season.
  • Nick D'Amore was 2-for-2 with three runs batted in and three runs scored. He also walked twice and stole two bases. Spencer Smith was 1-for-2 with a walk, two runs batted in and two runs scored. Nick Delp went 0-for-1 but walked twice and stole three bases.
  • Harford leads the nation in the stolen bases with 180. They have stolen 39 more bases than the next closest team despite playing five less games.

GAME 2
  • The Fighting Owls were forced to rally from behind in game two as they fell behind 3-0 in the first four innings. Harford was hitless through the first five innings as Barry Sanders was outstanding on the mound for the Falcons.
  • In the sixth Harford flipped the script, rallying for nine runs on six hits. Colin Adams ended the no-hit bid for Sanders with a leadoff double. After a one-out walk by Mike Richardson, Schwartz came up huge with a triple over the centerfielder's head to score two runs. It ended the day for Sanders and opened the floodgates for the Fighting Owls' offense as the jumped all over the Lackawanna bullpen.
  • With two outs, Calhoun dinked a clutch bloop single just out of the reach of the diving left fielder to tie the game at three. Lou Testa singled up the middle and Jordyn Smith stroked a two-run double to left center to give Harford a 5-3 lead they would not relinquish.
  • A dropped fly ball in the gap by the Falcons centerfielder extended the inning. That scored Smith from second, making it 6-3. Adams was then hit by a pitch and D'Amore drew a walk to load the bases. After Shilling scored on a wild pitch, Richardson singled to right to drive in two more runs to give Harford a decisive 9-3 lead.
  • Colby Lee (1-0) came in in relief and was lockdown for two innings. He struck out two and did not allow a baserunner.
  • David Moore made his first start of the season and battled to keep Harford within striking distance. He allowed just two hits and struck out eight but gave up a pair of walks and hit three batters while giving up three runs. Those three runs scored on an infield single and a pair of groundouts.
  • Brandon Nickel entered the game in the seventh in a non-save situation and struck out the side to finish the game.
