HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Fighting Owls put on a power display on a blustery day in Baltimore, hitting four home runs in a 16-2 win over Essex. Testa started things off for Harford, hitting a mammoth 3-run home run in the first inning. It was his ninth home run of the season.
  • A big seven-run fourth inning gave Harford a virtually insurmountable lead with the big blows coming from Schwartz and Jordyn Smith. After an RBI double by Nick Rowland and a sacrifice fly by Spencer Smith, Schwartz hit a two-run home run Harford ahead 8-1. It was his 12th long ball of the season. Three batters later Jordyn Smith hit a towering three-run homer down the left field line. His second home run of the season gave Harford an 11-1 lead.
  • In the fifth inning Spencer Smith hit his team-leading 14th home run of the season to give Harford a 12-1 lead.
  • Trevor Sprinkle (5-1) recovered from a rocky first inning to put together a very good start on the mound. In the first, Essex hitters forced Sprinkle to throw a lot of pitches and scored a run on two singles, two walks and a stolen base. After that, Sprinkle locked in and allowed just a hit and a walk over the next four innings. Overall, he gave up a run on three hits and three walks with seven strikeouts.
  • The Fighting Owls are not on the blistering home run pace the 2017 team was on when they led the nation with 137. But this year's team is no slouch in the power department as they rank fourth in the nation with 80 home runs so far with 11 games left to play in the regular season.
