HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Harford fell behind early as the Catamounts put up four runs in the top of the first on Harford.
  • The Fighting Owls began to claw back with Joey Schwartz scoring on a wild pitch in the second inning.
  • Harford scored two more in the bottom of the third on back-to-back RBI doubles by Ryan Calhoun and Schwartz to cut Potomac State's lead to just a single run.
  • The Catamounts answered back in the top of the fourth with a two run homer to take a 6-3 lead.
  • Harford responded with a big two out rally in the bottom half as a Jake Wyandt double got things going as he later scored on a Nick D'Amore RBI single on a bloop to right field.
  • Calhoun walked to load the bases and Schwartz crushed a grand slam over the left center field fence for his 15th bomb of the year to give Harford their first lead of the game.
  • Harford piled on in the fifth inning as a Matthew Shilling lead off double led to a Braydon Parr RBI single to left field.
  • After a couple of walks, Calhoun came through with a two out, two RBI single to left field that made it an 11-6 Fighting Owl lead.
  • Potomac State got back a couple of runs in the sixth inning and had bases loaded with the go ahead run at the plate, but Harford closer Justin Fox brilliantly struck out clean up hitter Zach Musgrove on three pitches to get out of the jam.
  • Harford scored a quartet of runs in the bottom of the sixth as Parr hit a double to the left center gap to score Shilling, Spencer Smith earned a bases loaded RBI walk, and D'Amore drove in a couple more with a single to left field.
  • Needing just one more run to finish the game early in the seventh inning, Michael Richardson hit a lead off double followed by a Shilling RBI double to walk it off and give Harford the opening round victory.
  • Fighting Owls' ace Zach Guth labored through 5 2/3 innings of work, but was able to earn his 10th victory of the season thanks to a potent Harford offense where all nine players in the lineup scored at lead one run.

UP NEXT
  • Harford will have a battle on their hands as they will face #1 seeded Chesapeake on Friday, May 11 at 2:30 PM.
  • The Skipjacks easily handled Hagerstown in the other opening round game of the day as they will come into the game with a 44-6 record.
  • Chesapeake will likely throw ace pitcher Joseph Nahas, who threw a complete game 17 strikeout performance against the Fighting Owls in the regular season back on March 30.
