HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Fighting Owls struck early in contest, as Ryan Calhoun's three-run blast and Joey Schwartz's solo home run made it 4-0 in the top of the first.
  • After shutting down the Skipjacks in the bottom of the inning, Braydon Parr would send a ball over the center field wall to give the men in blue a 5-0 lead.
  • Truman Thomas worked himself out of a jam the second, striking out Chesapeake's Devynn Hancock with runners at the corners to end the inning.
  • The Skipjacks scored their first run of the game in the bottom of third thanks to an RBI single from Dylan Nepert. Thomas answered the run by striking out the next better to keep the score at 5-1 heading into the fourth.
  • Chesapeake's Dayan Reinoso had a potential home run turned into a double after the ball bounced off the top of the center field fence. Thomas would come up big for the third straight inning, forcing two batters to groundout to neutralize the threat.
  • A solo home run in the bottom of the sixth brought Chesapeake within three. The Skipjacks would then load the bases to force a pitching change by Harford head coach Tom Eller. Eller turned to Justin Fox for the second straight day, who'd sandwich one run between two strikeouts to keep Harford in the lead.
  • The Fighting Owls loaded the bases themselves and forced two pitching changes in the top of the seventh. The men in blue seized the opportunity to expand their lead, with Schwartz's two-RBI single capping a four-run inning to put Harford ahead 9-3.
  • Chesapeake got two back via the long ball in the bottom of the seventh to make it 9-5. After a quiet eight Nick D'Amore would answer with three-run home run of his own in the top of the ninth to pull ahead 12-5.
  • After grabbing one more in ninth for a 13-5 lead, Joe Smeton shut down the Chesapeake bats to put Harford into the championship game on Saturday.
UP NEXT
  • Harford will take on Chesapeake College again on championship Saturday after the Skipjacks defeated Hagerstown in the elimination game.
  • Chesapeake will have to beat Harford twice as per the double elimination format of the tournament which means all the Fighting Owls needs to do is win one of two games to win the tournament and advance to the Eastern District championships in New York.
