HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Fighting Owls went into the third day of the tournament in the enviable position of needing to win just one game where as the Skipjacks had to beat Harford twice in a row to claim the regional title.
  • Chesapeake got on the board first in the bottom of the first, taking a 1-0 lead via sacrifice fly.
  • Joey Schwartz continued his hot streak with a two-run home run in the top of second; his third home run in as many games for the tournament.
  • Harford would add a third run in the inning thanks to Braydon Parr, who'd drive in Michael Richardson after the speedy second baseman legged out a triple in the previous at-bat of a blooper to right field.
  • The Fighting Owls lead would be cut in half after a wild pitch allowed the Skipjacks Michael Jean-Charles to score from third. Chesapeake followed the run by loading the bases, but Harford starter Trevor Sprinkle worked himself out of the jam by striking out two batters to keep the men in blue ahead 3-2.
  • Lou Testa's single kicked off a productive fourth inning for the Fighting Owls. The freshman outfielder touched home after Braydon Parr's walk and Jake Wyandt's single to left doubled Harford's lead. The runs would not stop there with Nick Rowland's RBI single and Nick D'Amore's two-RBI single driving Harford's lead up to 7-2.
  • Back-to-back home runs in the fourth from Chesapeake's Christian Murphy and Devynn Hancock cut the Fighting Owls lead down to 7-4. Sprinkle would once again pitch his way out of jam in the fourth, with Braeden Fausnaught stepping in during the fifth to retire the side.
  • The Skipjacks last run would come in the sixth inning to bring the Fighting Owls advantage down to 7-5. Harford's relievers would stifle Chesapeake from that point on, with the combination of Fausnaught, Nick Turnbull, David Moore and Brandon Nickel not allowing a hit over the final 10 outs to give Harford a spot in the NJCAA District Championships.
UP NEXT
  • Harford will begin their run in the Eastern District Tournament on Wednesday, May 16 in Wappingers Falls, N.Y. in a double elimination tournament that will also feature Monroe College, ASA and USC Sumter.
  • The winner of the district tournament will earn a place in the Juco World Series in Grand Junction, Colo. as the Fighting Owls attempt to return for the first time since the 2016 season.
