HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Fighting Owls dug themselves a big hole early in the game as Monroe dinked their way to six runs in the bottom of the first.
  • Starting pitcher Nick DeCarlo settled in after that and held the Mustangs scoreless over the next four innings in a gritty performance for the sophomore right hander.
  • Harford struggled to get things going at the plate, but finally broke through in the top of the sixth as Nick Rowland earned a four pitch lead-off walk.
  • After back-to-back strikeouts, Ryan Calhoun hit a hard grounder through the left side as Rowland was able to come all the way around and score from second on a throw that went out of play.
  • Joey Schwartz walked to keep the inning going which allowed Michael Richardson to bloop a single to right field to score Calhoun.
  • Matthew Shilling made it consecutive RBI singles with a shot up the middle to score Schwartz as Harford cut into the Mustangs lead.
  • Monroe pulled one back in the bottom of the sixth, but reliever Justin Fox came in with runners on the corners and was able to prevent any more damage.
  • Monroe's starting pitcher Francisco Justo put in a fantastic outing with 16 strikeouts in 6.2 innings, but his day was ended on pitch number 136 when Nick D'Amore crushed a ball over the left field wall to cut the Mustangs lead in half.
  • Fox stayed in to pitch two perfect innings with a couple of strikeouts with David Moore striking out the only batter he faced to keep the Fighting Owls within striking range.
  • Harford was able to get the tying run on base when Colin Adams got a one-out single, but Rowland and Spencer Smith struck out to end the game.
UP NEXT:
  • Harford will move to the loser's bracket where they will face ASA in an elimination game for the Fighting Owls' second game of day one.
