Fighting Owls Fall to Monroe, 5-2

  • Opponent: Monroe Mustangs
  • When: May 4
  • Score: Harford 2 – Monroe 5
  • Records: Harford 44-11 | Monroe 29-13-1
  • Location: Dick Caswell Field at Flowers Park (New Rochelle, N.Y.)
  • The Short Story: The Fighting Owls fell to Monroe, 5-2 Friday night in a well-pitched battle between two district rivals. The Fighting Owls had the bases loaded on multiple occasions but could not come up with a big hit to capitalize.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Matthew Shilling drew a bases-loaded walk to put Harford on the board first in the second inning.
  • Monroe answered in the bottom half of the inning, scoring twice on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly, giving them a 2-1 lead.
  • The game settled into a pitcher's duel after the second inning with the starting pitcher's putting up zeros for the next three innings. Trevor Sprinkle allowed two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out four over five innings.
  • Truman Thomas came on in relief for Sprinkle in the sixth inning. He set the side down in order in the sixth but ran into trouble in the seventh, giving up a run on a walk and a single followed by a sacrifice fly to give Monroe a 3-1 lead.
  • After another single and error put runners on second and third with one out, Joe Smeton entered the game and put out the fire without allowing a run. He struck out the first batter he faced and induced an inning-ending groundout to short stop to end the threat.
  • In the eighth, Harford loaded the bases but, again, could only put one run on the board. Nick Rowland led the inning off with a single, the team's first hit since Nick D'Amore's single in the second inning. Mike Richardson popped up in the infield but the Monroe infielder's seemingly let the ball drop on purpose and took the easy force out on Rowland at second. Spencer Smith and Ryan Calhoun drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Monroe would change pitchers after starter Francisco Urena threw his 126th pitch. He struck out 10 and walked eight over 7 1/3 innings. He was replaced by Luis Grullart who allowed a run on a wild pitch but got the last two outs to end the Fighting Owl threat.
  • Monroe would answer with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, taking a 5-2 lead that they would not relinquish.
